QUINCY, Ill. – When the Lindenwood Lions scored less than two minutes into Friday night's (Sept. 17) GLVC contest, no one on the QU bench panicked. Instead, Quincy scored two goals before halftime and held the Lions scoreless in the second half to earn a 2-1 home victory.
Lindenwood struck quickly when a free kick was awarded near QU's box. The Lions put the free chance into the net to gain an early 1-0 lead.
The Hawks remained focused with plenty of game left and dug in. After the goal, QU's defense limited Lindenwood to one shot the rest of the half while the attack sent off a total of eight shots in the first half.
In the 26th minute, one of those shots went in. After a ball went out of bounds off LU near their own defensive corner,
Spencer Van Nest ran over to the sideline for the throw-in. The senior defenseman heaved the ball into the box near the end line, and
Macker Little challenged a Lions' defender for the ball in mid air.
Little was able to redirect the ball high enough to get over the keeper while also sneaking his shot inside the left goal post. Quincy tied the game 1-1.
The Hawk offense wasn't done yet as they continued to apply pressure before the half. In the 43rd minute,
Jack Rhead played a header to the left side of the box. After Rhead's touch,
Keegan Klingele redirected the feed towards the center of the box inside 6 yards where
Alsadiq Hasan was waiting. Hasan buried the shot with his left foot to give QU the lead right before halftime.
This was all the Hawks needed the rest of the way as QU's defense held the visitor's to three second half shots. Quincy won 2-1.
