LEBANON, Ill. – The Quincy University men's and women's tennis teams competed against McKendree University on Tuesday evening (Sept. 14). QU's women's team defeated the Bearcats 4-3 while the men were swept 6-0.
Quincy had to battle some adversity during Tuesday's fall contest. Over halfway through the women's singles matches, play was halted due to lightning in the area. The matches were moved to an indoor facility nearly fifteen minutes away, but the Hawks were able to clinch the match.
Laila Leist-Alston looked dominant once again after picking up wins in both singles and doubles competition on Sunday. The senior won her singles match up 6-2, 6-1, and followed that with a 7-6 win in doubles with partner
Blanca Salas Cruz.
Salas Cruz also picked up a win in her singles match in come-from-behind fashion. The freshman dropped the first set 6-3 before coming back and winning a tight second set, 7-6, then won the match after her opponent was unable to finish.
Juliana Vidal also won in singles action as she took down her opponent 6-2, 6-3.
Nicole Lao and
Steffi Lao wrapped up the victories for QU as they won their number two doubles pairing 6-2.
The women's tennis team will host a six-team tournament at Reservoir Park this Friday and Saturday (Sept. 17 & 18). Western Illinois, Missouri Baptist, Truman State, Grandview, UMSL, and St. Francis will all be in attendance for the tournament.
