Hawks Stunned By Miners In GLVC Opener

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team began GLVC play at home against Missouri S&T on Sunday (Sept. 12) afternoon and grabbed the lead two different times in the contest. The visiting Miners scored twice in the final ten minutes to sneak past the Hawks, 4-3.

It took nearly thirty minutes for the fireworks to begin until QU was the first to strike. Aubrey Reis stepped up on a feed from defenseman, Nick Chapman, and scored the first goal of the game and his first of 2021. QU led 1-0 in the 28th minute.

Five minutes later, Quincy found a crease in S&T's defense and scored again. This time Cole Hayes buried the shot and gave the Hawks a two-goal lead in the 33rd minute.

The two teams went to the half at that score. QU put six shots on goal in the first half and limited the visitors to two.

Aubrey Reis put a shot off the crossbar in the 62nd minute, but Missouri S&T transitioned with a quick game-tying strike just seven minutes into the second half. The game was tied 2-2.

The Hawks stayed the course and executed with controlled touches on the offensive end in the 64th minute. Nick Chapman played a ball up to Cole Hayes who found Anthony Binaei in the center of the box for a go-ahead goal. Quincy led 3-2 with 25 minutes remaining.

After the Hawks' third goal, QU was unable to put another shot on frame. S&T turned up the pressure and got off five shots in the last 25 minutes. Two of those shots made it into the net in the 81st and 86th minute.

Quincy fell 4-3.
