ST. CHARLES, MO. – The Quincy Hawks baseball team took on Davenport in the NCAA Midwest Regional third round and lost 22-13 on Saturday (May 29) afternoon.
Jacob Kalusniak and Dayson Croes reached to begin the game, and Lance Logsdon hit a home run to give QU a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The Hawks plated two more runs behind Justin Eads and Cole Evans' RBI singles and led 5-0 after the first.
Logsdon got in some trouble in the second after letting up three RBI singles and QU clung to a 5-3 lead which made QU go to the bullpen. Tyler Carpenter came in, and Davenport scored another run on a ground ball double play. DU then took a 6-5 lead on a two-run home run to left field. The Panthers went ahead 6-5.
Quincy answered when they loaded the bases in the third for Dayson Croes, and he stroked a two-RBI double to left field and gave QU the lead back, 7-6. Logsdon followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 8-6 for the Hawks after the third.
Carpenter tossed a scoreless bottom of the third, and Cole Evans demolished a three-run home run to give QU an 11-6 lead after the top of the fourth.
Davenport responded with three spots in the bottom of the fourth and fifth to take back the lead again, 12-11. Lance Logsdon hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Jacob Kalusniak in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 12-12.
The Panthers went ahead for good after they collected five hits and scored six runs in the seventh to pull ahead 18-12. Justin Eads led off the eighth with a home run to pull the Hawks within 18-13, but that was as close as QU got.
Davenport added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth and led 22-13 after they got four hits in the frame.
Quincy had 15 hits including three home runs, and it was the first time the Hawks lost this season in a game where they hit two or more home runs. QU had six extra base hits but left ten runners on base and surrendered 23 hits while six went for extra bases.
Thirty-five runs were scored in the game and twelve different pitchers were used during the ball game between the two teams.
QU ended the season 29-15 while they had a 24-10 GLVC record in head coach Josh Rabe's 11th and final season. Rabe ends his coaching career with a 348-205 record.
