QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team hosted Drury University at Mart Heinen Softball Complex to play their last home games of the year on Sunday afternoon (May 2). The Hawks lost 4-1 in the opener, but they walked things off in extra innings during a 4-3 win in game two.
Game 1
Drury started things in the top of the third inning when they scored three runs on four hits to make it 3-0. The Panthers scored one more time in their next at bat after their lead-off batter hit a triple to the right field wall. She was brought home by a ground out to shortstop, 4-0.
The Hawks showed life in the bottom of the fourth when Ashley Gerber singled to right field, and then she later moved to third on a wild pitch. Gerber scored with a ground out to shortstop by Jayle Jennings to bring the first and only run in for the Hawks, 4-1.
Quincy ended up falling by this score as they were kept off the board in the final three frames.
Game 2
The Hawks scored the first run of the game after Jennings led off the bottom of the second with a line drive to the left side for a single. She then moved to second base on a ground out from Casey Brennan. After two outs were recorded, Katelyn Gratza singled with a strong line drive to right-center field allowing Jennings to score and make it 1-0.
Drury responded two innings later in the top of the fourth with a double, a two-run home run, and a solo home run to take a 3-1 lead.
Quincy did not give up and tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Courtney Kernich hit a double on a line drive over the center fielder. This was followed by a clutch two-run home run from Taylor Downen to tie the game, 3-3.
Jayle Jennings entered the circle for QU in the fifth inning and held Drury's offense scoreless for five innings.
As the game went into extras, the Hawks put an end to their last game of the season by loading the bases on three straight bunts in the bottom of the tenth inning. Audrey Hermann then proceeded to hit a sacrifice fly to right field that was deep enough to bring Casey Brennan home for the game-winning run.
The Hawks ended the season 20-24 and 11th in the GLVC.
