Baseball Falls In Wild Series Finale at Drury

OZARK, MO. – Six runs in the first inning was not enough for the QU Hawks to take Sunday's finale at Drury. Quincy fell by a final score of 10-9 in a wild series finale in Ozark, Missouri this afternoon (May 2).

The Hawk offense looked poised and hungry to take the series sweep after posting a six spot in the top of the first inning. Quincy's bats knocked around four hits and drew five walks en route to knocking out Drury's starter just two outs into the game.

QU's first run was on a Nolan Wosman walk with the bases loaded, then Gino D'Alessio hit a base hit to right to score Dayson Croes. Joe Roscetti drew another bases loaded walk to make it 3-0, and Brock Boynton laced a ball into center field which brought home two more Hawks. The sixth and final run came on yet another bases-loaded walk to Dayson Croes, and Quincy held a 6-0 lead.

With all the momentum on their side, the Panthers rallied the troops and put together three straight hits in the bottom of the frame. The third hit was a two-RBI triple which cut Quincy's lead to 6-2. Drury hit a grounder to the right side and scored the runner at third to cut the deficit in half, 6-3.

The Hawks went 1-2-3 in the second which allowed the Panthers to keep some momentum. DU led off with a double, a strikeout, and a single to put men on the corners. The Panthers then stole second, and singled which brought home a pair as the QU lead was cut to one, 6-5.

QU's offense had nothing doing in the third. Drury came to the plate and regained control after being down by six runs. The Hawks surrendered four straight hits with two outs which gave the home team a 8-6 lead. Another was tacked on after a walk and a single to make it 9-6 after just three innings of play.

Lance Logsdon hit a one-out double in the top of the fourth, but the next two outs were recorded. John Hurayt then took the mound and put up a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning.

Quincy threatened again in the sixth. Jacob Kalusniak scored on a balk call on Drury's pitcher. QU trailed 9-7.

The Hawks made things interesting in the top half of the seventh when Gino D'Alessio doubled, and Nolan Wosman came in after an error by the right fielder. Later in the inning, with two outs, Brock Boynton got into a two-RBI triple to notch things up at nine apiece.

After another QU pitching change, Drury's first batter struck out in the seventh. This was followed by a walk and a single to put runners at the corners. The next batter singled and brought in the go-ahead run, 10-9.

QU went quietly in both the eighth and ninth innings and lost by a final score of 10-9.
