Box Score ST. CHARLES, MO---The Quincy University baseball team aimed for revenge to survive and advance in an elimination game against Southern Indiana on Saturday (May 15) morning, but fell 10-4.
Lance Logsdon toed the rubber for the home Hawks and surrendered a leadoff triple in the first, but induced two groundouts and a strikeout to leave a runner at third base.
In the home half of the first, QU had a leadoff single by Jacob Kalusniak, Dayson Croes reached on fielder's choice, and they both advanced on a Wosman groundout. The Hawks then produced a run behind a Michael Nielsen groundout to second which scored Kalusniak to give QU a 1-0 lead.
Logsdon had three consecutive three ball counts to open the top of the second. The right-hander was able to get the first two outs of the inning, but the third batter resulted in a walk and the next USI hitter had a base knock to right field to put runners on the corners with two outs. USI's Aaron Euler stole second and then USI threatened with runners on second and third with two outs, after which Logsdon issued a walk to load the bases. Logsdon was able to come back and catch USI's Bryce Krizan looking with an outside fastball to end the inning on a 3-2 pitch.
The Hawks went down in order in the bottom of the second on a fly out and two strikeouts. Logsdon induced a ground ball, then surrendered a single to right field to begin the third. This brought the cleanup hitter to the plate and Logsdon recorded a strikeout. Logsdon recorded another punch out, but then Manny Lopez tied the game for the Screaming Eagles with a two-out RBI double to score Ethan Hunter.
USI starter Austin Gossmann got Brock Boynton to ground out to begin the third inning, but then Kalusniak got his second base hit which was also the second for the Hawks. Dayson Croes then reached on an error to put runners on first and second for Nolan Wosman who hit into an inning-ending double play.
In three innings of work, Logsdon allowed four hits, three walks, and one run on 81 pitches. John Hurayt then came out of the bullpen in a tied game and got two quick outs before his command abandoned him. A walk and a hit gave USI a 2-1 lead. Hurayt then walked in two runs to give USI a 4-1 lead. Then, QU turned to Brett Taucher out of the bullpen, and he walked a runner in before he ended the inning on a popout to the second baseman. QU trailed 5-1 after the four-run, one-hit inning where USI standed the bases loaded as well.
Through the first four frames, all of USI's runs came after two-out walks. USI scored two more runs in the top of the fifth after three consecutive hits led to a 2-RBI double and QU then trailed 7-1.
Justin Eads led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to left field, but was left on base. Taucher then surrendered a home run to left field in the top of the sixth to make USI's lead 8-1. Dalton Overstreet then came into the game with one on and one out during the top of the sixth, and let in two more runs on a single and QU trailed 10-1.
Nolan Wosman led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple, and then Nielsen drew a walk. Logsdon then reached on a fielder's choice to bring home Wosman to make the score 10-2 USI.
Gino D'Alessio then smoked a double to right field which put runners on second and third with one out. Roscetti then grounded out to bring another run across to make the score 10-3 USI.
Willie Sanchez then came in and threw a scoreless seventh, but the Hawks went down in the next half inning. Jimmy McDonald went to pitch in the top of the eighth inning and got a fly out but then issued a walk and a hit to place runners on the corners. McDonald induced a ground ball double play to end the inning.
The middle of the order for the Hawks was retired in order in the eighth inning, and Sam Stephens went to pitch in the top of the ninth for QU and struck out the side in order.
QU had three hits and plated a run in the ninth inning, but the game ended on a double play and the Hawks lost, 10-4.
