ST. CHARLES, MO. – The Quincy University baseball team opened the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament against Southern Indiana on Thursday (May 13) afternoon and fell 3-2.
The Hawks were coming off two losses from No. 4 UIS headed into the opening game, and the Screaming Eagles plated two runs on two hits in the 24-pitch first frame against the GLVC Pitcher of the year Riley Martin. Quincy answered after Dayson Croes walked and Lance Logsdon doubled which led to a 2-RBI single by Michael Nielsen to tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the first.
Martin then tossed a scoreless second inning, and QU went down in order in the second to keep the score tied. Martin then struck out three consecutive hitters in the third frame, and
Jacob Kalusniak led off the third with an infield single.
The Hawks had two hits in the bottom of the third but were unable to score. Martin began the fourth with two strikeouts and threw another scoreless inning in the fourth.
Joe Roscetti had a single up the middle with one out in the fourth, but was stranded and the score stayed at 2-2. The Hawks left four in base through the first four innings.
Both teams were held in check until Martin tossed his 135th pitch which resulted in a go-ahead RBI single with two outs in the seventh and USI led 3-2. Jack Widhalm came in relief with two outs and two on in the seventh.
The Hawks got two runners on base in the seventh, but an inning ending strikeout and subsequent ejection closed the frame and QU trailed 3-2 after seven innings.
Jack Widhalm tossed 2.1 scoreless innings, but the Hawks were held scoreless in the final eight innings while they left eight runners on base and lost by one run.
