Caceres Gives Hawks 2-1 Overtime Win Over UIS

Quincy, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team went to overtime for the second time in as many games on Sunday afternoon (March 21). The Hawks got a golden goal after a red card penalty led to a free kick at the top of the box. Edrey Caceres bent a low line drive around the wall to give QU a 2-1 overtime win over Illinois Springfield.

With gusty winds coming out of the south all game, the Hawks battled the elements and got off 19 total shots and sent eight on goal in the contest. Despite this, the Prairie Stars were the first to strike in the 17th minute.

The Hawks were held scoreless up until halftime and twenty-five minutes into the second half, but Nick Chapman provided the spark Quincy needed in the 71st minute. The defender from Sheffield, United Kingdom sent a corner kick off the right foot and bent it into the box to tie the game.

QU smelled blood in the water and sent off five more shots in the final nineteen minutes, but the game moved to overtime. In the extra period, Alsadiq Hasan received a play in from the back line inside the UIS defensive front. Hasan was brought down hard at the top of the Prairie Star's goalie box, and a red card was given.

After a prolonged argument from Illinois Springfield, it was determined a free kick at the top arc of the goalie box would be given instead of a penalty kick.

These few feet of difference did not affect Edrey Caceres and his shot attempt. The freshman from Houston, Texas stepped up and sent off a low line drive kick that skipped around the wall of defenders, past the diving keeper, and rolled just inside the right post. It was Caceres' first goal of the season and it came in game-winning fashion.

The Hawks (4-3-1, 4-3-1 GLVC) will play next on Sunday at home against Truman State University.
