Hawks Earn First Win, Down Lindenwood 2-0

ST. CHARLES---The Quincy University men's soccer team earned its first victory of the year with a 2-0 win at Lindenwood on Sunday (Feb 28) afternoon.

The Hawks forced the issue early as they struck four shots in the first 17th minutes of the match. Cole Hayes had an opportunity in the fifth minute, but the Lions scrambled for a team save. Jack Rhead then shot the ball on frame in the seventh minute but it was stopped by Lions keeper JD Ellis.

Hawks keeper Michele Barletta was not tested until the 26th minute when he stopped the Lions first shot on goal toward the lower left corner of the net. Barletta made another save just four minutes before halftime, and Rhead then shot the ball in the upper left corner but it was saved in the 43rd minute. Neither team was able to find the back of the net during the first half. Quincy had four corners, and forced Lindenwood to make three saves during the first 45-minute period.

Quincy got a corner kick a few minutes into the second half,and Macker Little had a shot thereafter in the 48th minute that was saved by the Lions. Quincy earned its fifth corner kick of the second half, just eight minutes into the frame. Senior midfielder Aubrey Reis broke the scoreless tie in the 53rd minute off the corner as the senior bent the ball into the back of the net. 

Jack Rhead then added another goal in the 76th minute to give QU a 2-0 lead in the 76th minute. Rhead led the Hawks with three shots on goal and provided a strong attack during the game. Rhead executed by scoring on a penalty kick and fired it past the keeper.

Reis' goal proved to be the game winner, and Reis has led the team in goals the last three seasons. Reis led the GLVC in 2018 with 15 goals, and has been recognized as an All-conference performer for multiple years with the Hawks.

Quincy had 17 shots during the game, seven of which were on goal. The Hawks held the advantage on corners 10-4 as well. Barletta earned the shutout with three saves during the 90-minute contest.
