KANSAS CITY, MO – The Quincy University women's basketball team got a combined 36 points from
Jazzpher Evans and
Aleksandra Petrovic in Saturday's GLVC matchup with Rockhurst, but the Hawks were slowed down late in a 71-55 defeat.
The home Hawks of Rockhurst began the game on a tear after jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the first three minutes. Rockhurst's lead grew as large as 14-3 in the first quarter before Quincy chipped away. QU outscored Rockhurst 10-2 in the final four and a half minutes in the opening quarter to make it 16-13 going into the second.
Jazzpher Evans had ten of the team's thirteen points in the first ten minutes of play.
Aleksandra Petrovic opened up quarter number two with a three ball to tie the game at 16 apiece.
Sarah Nelson followed that up with a three-point play after being fouled on a lay up conversion to give Quincy their first lead with 7:47 left in the second.
Quincy ended the first half in front and went to the locker room clinging to a 26-22 lead. After trailing 14-3, Quincy outscored RU 23-8 up until the break.
A major contributor to that scoring swing was defense. The Hawks defense swarmed RU in the first half and limited Rockhurst to under 25% shooting from the floor.
After halftime, Quincy kept Rockhurst at bay for the first four minutes, but with 6:02 to play in the third, the home team tied the game at 31-31 with a three-point play. Rockhurst took the lead after the free throw was made.
This lead change occurred within a 10-1 run by Rockhust in a two-minute span that allowed the home Hawks to take a 37-32 lead into a media timeout.
Quincy made a late third quarter push behind four points by
Aleksandra Petrovic and a free throw by
Amanda Porth. Going into the last quarter, QU trailed 42-39.
Rockhurst gained separation with a 7-0 run in the first minute and a half of the fourth quarter and took a 49-39 lead. Quincy scored the next seven of ten points to cut it to a six-point game, but the home Hawks of Rockhurst pulled ahead once and for all after a 10-3 run allowed their lead to swell to 13 points, 62-49.
QU was unable to make up ground in the final five minutes and fell by a final score of 71-55. The Hawks were held without a field goal in the final four minutes.
