LIBERTY, MO – The Quincy University women's basketball team fell 62-54 on the road in Liberty, Missouri on Thursday (Feb. 18) night. The Hawks tied the contest at 54-54 on a Sarah Nelson and-one, but the Cardinals closed the game with an 8-0 run for the win.
The Hawks jumped out to a 6-5 lead after buckets from Amanda Porth, Sarah Nelson, and Aleksandra Petrovic. However, the Cardinals swarmed the Hawks and went on a 16-4 run to close the frame. The Cardinals made four 3-pointers in the first quarter and led 21-8 in the first quarter.
Both offenses were stagnant in the second frame as neither team notched double-digits. The Hawks were outscored 9-7 in the second quarter and trailed 30-15 in the first half. Despite the 15 point deficit, QU held William Jewell to 35.7% shooting in the first half.
QU opened the 3rd quarter on a 14-6 run to cut the Cardinals lead to 36-29. Nelson scored nine of the 14 points during the run. However, the Cardinals responded with a 10-2 scamper of their own and led 48-33 at the end of the third quarter.
Quincy opened the fourth frame on an 11-2 run after back-to-back baskets from freshman guard Jazzpher Evans. The Hawks limited the Cardinals to 1-of-9 from the field during that span. Nelson, who eclipsed 20 points for the third consecutive game, received a pass from Amanda Porth and scored to make the score 52-48. Nelson then followed with an and-one to tie the score with 3:09 to go.
The Cardinals closed out the game on a 8-0 run to secure the win.
