QUINCY, Ill. - The QU women's basketball team hung tough with the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons in the first half of Monday (Nov. 29) night's conference opener, but the Hawks were unable to keep pace in the second half and fell, 61-47.
Quincy was able to keep the game close in the first half, and the Hawks held a 9-7 lead in the first quarter after a made jumper by
Beth Matas Martin. Unfortunately, this would be QU's final lead of the game. The Tritons scored the final six points of the first quarter as they led 15-9 at the end of the first ten minutes of play.
Regan Loconte cut it to a three-point game, 25-22, after she made a clutch three with under two minutes left in the second period. The Hawks went to the break trailing 27-22 as they held UMSL to just 1-of-10 from beyond the arc in the first half.
So far this season, the third quarter has not been QU's friend, and that pattern continued on Monday. QU was outscored 19-10 by the Tritons in the third as the Hawks did not make a three-point attempt (0-5) and made just four field goals in the quarter. Going into the final ten minutes of play, the Hawks trailed 46-32.
This was enough cushion for the Tritons to play the possession game and hang on to the lead. Quincy dropped the GLVC opener 61-47.
The Hawks turned the ball over 17 times compared to nine turnovers by UMSL.
