Hawks Come Up Short In Card-Heavy Contest With USI

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's soccer team hosted the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 3), and the Hawks fell 3-1 after being forced to play two men down in a game where eleven cards were issued.

Southern Indiana went on the attack first and scored just over ten minutes in, but this was the only goal of a relatively quiet first half.

Most of Sunday afternoon's fireworks came in the second half. USI netted their second goal of the game a minute and a half after the halftime break.

Cards became a factor in the 48th minute when two Screaming Eagles were given yellows four minutes apart. In the 52nd minute, Jack Rhead was given his second yellow of the game on a challenge off a goal kick. Quincy had to play with ten men.

Despite the hindrance, QU maintained some offensive pressure behind a trio of shots by Kyle Swanner. Swanner's attempt in the 54th minute was on frame but saved.

Two more yellow cards were given after Rhead was forced to exit, and the Hawks were able to swing some momentum back in their favor. Cole Hayes was pushed down in the box allowing a Quincy penalty kick in the 73rd minute. Veteran Aubrey Reis stepped up and knocked it in to put QU on the board.

Both teams sent out a flurry of shots over the next ten minutes with six coming from the visiting Screaming Eagles.

In the 83rd minute, QU was handed a back-breaking red card that was given to defender Spencer Van Nest for a non-contact offense. With the Hawks now forced to play two players down, USI was able to capitalize less than three minutes later with their third goal.

Quincy fell by a final of 3-1.

A total of 11 cards were given in the contest with nine coming in the second half. USI was dealt four cards to Quincy's seven despite committing 20 fouls to QU's seven.
