QUINCY, Ill. - The QU men's soccer team squared off with the top-ranked team in the nation on Friday night (Oct. 1). The Hawks battled the Indianapolis Greyhounds down to the wire, but a goal in the last minute and a half of regulation was the dagger as QU fell, 2-1.
QU was riding a wave of energy at the start of the game after
Cole Hayes shocked the visitors by scoring in the 18th minute of play.
Grant Higgins connected with the speedy forward from the back line, and Hayes did the rest. This was the Quincy native's fourth goal of the season.
It took the number-one-ranked Greyhounds just five minutes to equalize. UIndy scored in the 23rd minute on a long feed from the back line into QU's defensive zone. The score was notched up 1-1 halfway through the first period.
Quincy's lone shot in the first half was Hayes goal, and Indy sent off three more after the equalizing goal. Both teams went to the locker room tied 1-1.
Things started to intensify as the second half wore on. A total of 17 fouls were called in the second half alone with 11 being called on the visiting Greyhounds. The physical play eventually paid off for UIndy as they buried a dagger with just a minute and 27 seconds left in regulation.
The Hawk upset came up short, 2-1.
