Callier Leads QU to Victory Over Bearcats

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team hosted McKendree on Saturday afternoon (Jan 23.) riding a 3-game losing streak and was without leading scorer Tanner Stuckman. The Hawks prevailed, 75-69 behind a 23-point performance from senior, Charles Callier.
 
Charles Callier was money from the field during the contest while he sunk six triples. 
 
Three-point shots fell early for QU and as they soared to a 21-9 lead to open the game. Callier aided the run by contributing three triples on his first three attempts, and the Hawks opened the game with five total.
 
McKendree came back and cut the deficit to three points with 3:34 left in the first half as the score was 28-25, QU. Callier answered the bell with a clutch three-pointer with 3:17 left to extended the lead to 31-25. 
 
Quincy led at the half by a score of 37-32 as the Hawks went 7-12 from downtown during the first frame. 
 
Freshman Solomon Gustafson added two post baskets in the opening stages of the second half to push the Hawks lead to 43-32 with 16:27 to go in the game. Gustafson was making his first collegiate start in the absence of Stuckman. 
 
Callier continued his efficient afternoon as he knocked down a jump shot from mid-range with 11:59 left in the second half to give the Hawks a 12-point advantage at 51-39. 
 
McKendree, who entered the contest leading the league in three-point field goals made per game, only shot 3-12 from beyond the arc in the first half. However, the Bearcats responded with three consecutive three-pointers to cut the twelve-point lead down to just three points at 53-50 with 9:33 left in the second half. 
 
Silas Crisler, added 10 points and 11 boards on the day and scored a basket after cutting from the baseline in the paint with 6:11 left in the game to give the Hawks a 60-52 lead. 
 
The Bearcats responded with five straight points and cut the deficit to 60-57 with 4:59 left in the game. 
 
Jamaurie Coakley, who had 5 assists and 5 rebounds for QU, knocked down two free throws with 3:37 left to push QU's lead to seven points. 
 
The Hawks were able to hang on to the advantage by making foul shots in clutch time, as the Bearcats were unable to get closer than four points. Quincy won their fourth game of the season by a final score of 75-69.
