QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team made quick work of cross-state rival Culver-Stockton College on Thursday night (March 5th). The Hawks hit .468 over the course of a three-set sweep 25-15, 25-16, 25-17.
1st Set
Quincy got off to a solid start on Thursday night. The home squad jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start things off.
Three different Hawks got in on the attack during the early burst.
Blake Sprecher,
Manuel Hernandez, and
Omari Wheeler put themselves in the kill column.
QU forced an early timeout by Culver-Stockton when their lead grew to 11-4.
The strong start carried the Hawks through the first set. QU never trailed as they went on to win 25-15.
Omari Wheeler,
Blake Sprecher, and
Manuel Hernandez combined for 11 kills as the Hawks hit .583 in the first set.
2nd Set
Culver had an answer for every Hawks point at the start of set two. Both teams found themselves tied 5-5 after the first ten points.
The trio of Hernandez, Sprecher, and Wheeler continued to hit well for the Hawks as they tallied kills in the early portion of the set.
After the score was tied at 9-9, the Hawks gained some distance. Quincy took the lead 16-11 behind a 7-2 run fueled by four errors on the Wildcats.
Culver called their first timeout of the set, but it did not matter. QU continued to play aggressively and built their lead to 20-13.
The Hawks won set two by a final score of 25-16.
3rd Set
Culver-Stockton came roaring out of the locker room in set three. The visitors took a 4-1 lead to start things off.
Quincy clapped right back with a 5-1 run to move in front 6-5.
Eddie Jakubauskas and
Omari Wheeler slammed down kills during the surge.
The Hawks used this momentum swing to gain some distance at the midway point. Quincy led 13-9 which forced the first timeout of the set by CSC.
Things continued to swing in the Hawks favor as
Cooper Coleman got in on the attack. His kill gave the home team a 17-11 advantage.
Quincy closed things out by winning set three 25-17.
Omari Wheeler led the way for QU by finishing with 16 kills.
Manuel Hernandez added eight kills and six digs.
Next Game
The men's volleyball team takes a bit of a hiatus before returning to action on Wednesday, March 18th at Lindenwood University. That game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
