QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team faced the second-ranked team in NAIA on Saturday night (Feb. 8) in Pepsi Arena. The Hawks lost in straight sets 25-23, 25-17, 25-16.
1st Set
Quincy got out to the early lead after back-to-back Viking errors and a kill from
Eddie Jakubauskas made the score 3-1.
Grand View was able to tie the score at 5-5 after a kill from Felix Chapman.
The Vikings gained their first lead after a block by Chapman and Koby Barnes made the score 9-8. The Hawks were able to tie the game once again at 10-10 after a Viking attack error.
Quincy called their first timeout when Grand View hopped ahead 13-10.
The Hawks came out of the timeout and scored back-to-back points to move within one. A few points later, the Hawks tied the game at 14 apiece following a Grand View attack error.
Quincy forced the Vikings to take their first timeout after a four-point run gave QU an 18-16 lead.
The Hawks held the lead 21-19, but the Vikings were able to come back and tie the score 22-22.
Grand View came back with two straight points to force game-point.
Eddie Jakubauskas got a kill out of the timeout for the Hawks, but Grand View took set one 25-23.
2nd Set
The visitors jumped ahead 4-1 to begin the second set, but the Hawks cut it to 4-3 after back-to-back points.
Quincy was able to work the game back to a tie when a three-point run made it 8-8. The run continued with a GVU attack error and a kill by
Zach Reider. QU went ahead 10-8.
The Vikings briefly regained the lead 14-13, but QU got a kill by Jakubauskas to notch things back up.
Head coach
Gavin Mueller called his first timeout of the second set after GVU went ahead on the next two points 16-14.
The Vikings closed out set two with a 9-3 run to win 25-17.
3rd Set
The Hawks and Vikings sat tied after the first six points in set three. GVU moved in front 9-5 following a 4-1 run.
Quincy called a timeout after the Viking lead grew to 12-7.
The Vikings remained in front for a majority of the third set, but Quincy was able to cut the deficit to three when the score reached 15-12.
GVU pulled back ahead 18-12 behind a 3-0 run which led to a QU timeout.
The Hawks were unable to recover from the deficit and dropped the third set 25-16.
