ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team hit the road for a midweek matchup with #5 Lewis University on Wednesday night (Feb. 19). The Hawks fell to the nationally-ranked Flyers 3-0 (17-25, 23-25, 11-25).
How It Happened
1st Set
QU found themselves down by three early on. The Flyers tallied kills on seven of their first nine points to take a 9-6 lead, but the Hawks came storming back.
Two kills from
Omari Wheeler and
Eddie Jakubauskas combined with three Lewis errors propelled Quincy on a 5-0 run to take an 11-9 lead.
That lead was short-lived, however, as the Flyers answered by scoring ten of the next 14 points, forcing a QU timeout.
The Hawks scored the first two points out of the break with a kill from
Blake Sprecher and a service ace from
Michael Ladner, but Lewis closed out the set on a 6-0 run.
The home team took the first set 25-17.
2nd Set
The second set was the most competitive of the match as the teams saw 17 ties and seven lead changes.
QU held a 9-8 lead, but the Flyers took the next two points to pull ahead.
The Hawks responded by rattling off three straight points to take the lead right back, 12-10.
Adam Meyer slammed down a kill and QU took advantage of two Flyer attack errors to take the largest lead of the set, 15-12.
Lewis fought all the way back to tie the score at 18-18, and proceeded to win five of the next eight points to go up 23-21.
Back-to-back kills from
Michael Ladner tied the score, forcing Lewis to take a timeout.
The timeout went in favor of the Flyers as they scored the last two points to win the set 25-23.
3rd Set
Lewis opened up a 10-5 lead in the third set and the Hawks were never able to recover.
QU was able to cut the lead to four at 11-7, but the #5-ranked team in the country pulled away after that.
The Flyers took 11 of the next 12 points to take a commanding 22-8 lead.
Lewis went on to win the set 25-11 and take the 3-0 victory.
