Quincy Outlasted by Cardinals In GLVC Action

Liberty, MO. – The Quincy University men's basketball team fell at the hands of William Jewell on the road 86-74 on Saturday afternoon (Jan 4). Austin Downing, Tanner Stuckman, and Aziz Fadika each had over 15 points. 

How It Happened
1st Half
Quincy got off to a fast start on Saturday afternoon. Following buckets from Tanner Stuckman, Aziz Fadika, and Charles Callier, the Hawks held an early 8-2 lead. 

The Cardinals responded with five straight points to bring the score within one, but QU clapped back with a lay up from Austin Downing and a three-pointer by Adam Moore

Quincy led 13-7 through the first five minutes. 

With 12:11 remaining in the first half, William Jewell gained their first lead of the game after a 7-0 run. Downing answered with a three-pointer to put the Hawks back ahead 16-14. 

At the eight-minute mark, Downing continued to gain rhythm from deep as he knocked in another three to tie the game at 21-21. 

The rest of the first half was tightly contested. The Cardinals of William Jewell were not able to pull ahead by more than four points in the last five minutes. 

Both teams went to the locker room with a 39-38 score favoring WJC. Despite the small deficit, the Hawks shot over 45% from the field in the first twenty minutes and looked to stay efficient on the offensive end. 

2nd Half 
William Jewell came out of the break with urgency. The Cardinals opened up the second half on a 15-7 run in the first five minutes. Quincy trailed 54-45 with 14:11 remaining. 

QU responded with a 6-0 run to bring themselves within three points. Tanner Stuckman scored all six points during the run. The Hawks trailed 54-51. 

The Cardinals once again regained the momentum by scoring the next 12 of 15 points to extend their lead back to nine 63-54 with under ten minutes left to play. 

With a little over eight minutes remaining, Ryan Briscoe got to the rim for a layup which cut the score to 69-60 William Jewell. 

Charles Callier later put in a layup then followed with a jumper to cut the Hawks deficit to six points with 5:32 left to play. 

William Jewell ended the second half how they started it: with a 15-7 run. The Cardinals controlled the momentum towards the end, and went a perfect eight of eight from the free throw stripe. 

Quincy suffered their third straight GLVC loss by the final score of 86-74.
