QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team played on back-to-back nights in Pepsi Arena and faced Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday night (Jan. 11). The Hawks were handed their second loss in as many days with a 25-23, 25-18, 25-23 defeat at the hands of the Railsplitters.
1st Set
The Railsplitters started things off with an ace on the opening serve but followed with a serving error which tied the score 1-1.
Lincoln Memorial went ahead 3-1 after a kill and a block.
Michael Ladner tied the game up at 3-3 with his first kill of the match two points later.
Quincy fell behind by two points at 6-4, but quickly recovered with a kill from Ladner and a block by
Omari Wheeler. With the score tied 6-6, an attack error on LMU gave QU their first lead.
This started a 4-0 run for QU as the Hawks took a 9-6 lead. The momentum continued to roll on the side of Quincy as they pushed their lead to 13-9 after a kill from
Eddie Jakubauskas. LMU called their first timeout of the game.
The Railsplitters came right back after the break to score four in a row. Jakubauskas stopped the run with a kill as QU remained ahead 14-12.
A few points later, LMU tied the first set at 15-15. An ace by the Railsplitters on the next point allowed them to take back the lead.
The score remained close until the end of the set. Lincoln Memorial gained a 24-20 lead, but the Hawks fought back with three points in a row. Unfortunately, LMU got the next point to take the first set win 25-23.
2nd Set
Quincy got out to an early lead in set two.
Yoran Raymaekers had a solo block to give the Hawks an early 4-2 advantage.
The Railsplitters worked their way back to a 5-5 tie after a blocking error on QU.
Quincy momentarily lost their lead but worked a 10-10 tie later on in the set. Freshman
Eddie Jakubauskas collected a kill to tie the score.
LMU took a 13-11 lead shortly after, and head coach
Gavin Mueller took a timeout.
After the minute break, the Railsplitters continued to apply pressure. Lincoln Memorial upped their lead to five after a 3-0 run made the score 16-11.
The Hawks had an answer and went on a 3-0 run of their own. The tally in set two moved to 16-14 favoring LMU.
Lincoln Memorial pushed their lead to 22-18 before taking the second set by the score of 25-18.
3rd Set
Quincy came out with urgency in set three. The Hawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead which forced an early timeout by the Railsplitters.
Lincoln Memorial came all the way back and forced a tie when the score moved to 7-7. The Railsplitters scored the next four of five points to go ahead 11-8, gaining their first lead of set three.
The Hawks were forced to play from behind from this point on. Their deficit grew to as many as five points, but QU battled back. The home team brought the score to 17-16 after a kill by
Michael Ladner.
LMU was able to take a 21-18 lead, but the Hawks responded by making it a one point game, 23-22. The Railsplitters got a point and then gave one right back to Quincy on a serving error.
Quincy fell on the next point by the final score of 25-23.
