Hawks Offense Comes Alive In Home-Opening Win

QUINCY, IL – The Quincy University men's soccer team rallied from a season-opening loss to wipe out Northern Michigan on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 8) at Legends Stadium, 6-2.

The Hawks were left reeling after a loss against Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday, but playing in their first home game of the season, they were in top form against the Wildcats.

Play by Play

1st Half

The Hawks and Wildcats matchup saw a lot of action from the start, with eight goals scored and nine yellow cards handed out.

Both teams got off four shots in the first half, but QU made one count in the 20th minute.

Quincy put the pressure on and forced a corner kick. Senior midfielder Cooper Reis sent a high, curling ball into the box, and Alsadiq Hasan jumped above the covering defender to head the ball past the Wildcat goalkeeper. The Hawks led 1-0 heading into halftime.

2nd Half

QU's offense exploded in the second half.

The Hawks added to their lead in the 47th minute. Craig Chisholm controlled a lose ball on the left side and crossed it into the middle box where Anthony Christante came streaking in. Christante hammered the feed into the back of the net from three yards out, putting QU ahead 2-0.

Quincy found the back of the net once again seven minutes later. Redshirt freshman Macker Little got behind the defense down the center of the field off a through ball from Christante. Little hit it through the goalkeeper's legs from 10 yards out to increase the Hawks lead to 3-0.

The Wildcats got on the board in the 62nd minute as Ryan Palmbaum knocked in a Callum Olpin cross. Quincy remained in front 3-1.

The Hawks responded just three minutes later as Alsadiq Hasan recorded his second goal of the game. Hasan controlled a bouncing ball in the box, broke past two defenders and beat the keeper to make the score 4-1.

Northern Michigan cut into the lead once again in the 71st minute. Palmbaum volleyed in a Ben Hoffman cross from 18 yards out to get within two scores as the tally moved to 4-2.

Adam Whybrow and the Hawks defense locked in after that, not giving up a goal the rest of the way.

The offense put their foot to the pedal, making a statement late in the game.

Ty Rogers got a hold of an attempted clearance by the Northern Michigan defense. Rogers let one fly from the left side of the box and the ball found the net after deflecting off a Wildcat defender. QU went up 5-2.

Cooper Reis put the icing on the cake in the 76th minute. The redshirt senior controlled a clearance just above the box and did not disappoint. Reis ripped a laser into the right side of the net to put the Hawks up 6-2 and close the door on the Wildcats.

Quincy put nine to shots on goal to Northern Michigan's eight, and held an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.

QU's six goals scored are the most since the 2014 Final Four team put up six against Maryville.
