KENOSHA, WI – The Quincy University men's soccer team opened up their 2019 campaign on the road as they faced the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers.
1st Half
The 2019 season started off with the Hawks having to play from behind. The Rangers were able break through first in the first ten minutes of play.
Junior forward, Todor Atlija scored the game's first goal in the 9th minute to put Wisconsin-Parkside ahead.
The Hawks did not trail for long as Spencer Van Nest provided an answer just three minutes later. Van Nest's goal was assisted by redshirt freshman
Alsadiq Hasan in the 12th minute of play.
After the two early goals, both teams hunkered down on defense. Quincy was only able to get off two shots in the remainder of the first half.
The Rangers threatened with seven shots in the remaining thirty minutes of the opening half.
Twice the Hawks were able to make team saves in the 15th and 39th minute. Redshirt senior goalkeeper
Adam Whybrow made two saves late in the half in the 38th and 42nd minute to keep the Hawks tied going into the half.
2nd Half
The Parkside offense applied the pressure in the second half. The Rangers controlled possession for the better part of the last forty five minutes of play, and broke the tie in the 53rd minute.
Wisconsin-Parkside scored less than ten minutes into the half to take a 2-1 lead over the Hawks.
Even after the go-ahead goal, Quincy was unable to get the ball out of their defensive zone. Parkside rattled off 14 shots in the final half of the game to keep the Hawks on the defensive.
Goalkeeper
Adam Whybrow gave QU some momentum late in the contest when he made a diving stop on a Parkside penalty kick. With less than 12 minutes to play, the Hawks got called for a hand ball in the box allowing the Rangers to take a penalty kick.
Whybrow was able to deflect the shot up into the air as he then corralled the save on the rebound.
The Hawks responded with one last surge in the final ten minutes. QU was able to put up two shots, but came up empty.
Parkside held on for the 2-1 win as Quincy dropped the 2019 season-opener 2-1.
