SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Quincy University women's volleyball team traveled to Illinois Springfield on Friday (Sept. 27) night and the Prairie Stars came away with a straight set win over the Hawks, 25-22, 26-24, 25-19. The match served as the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams.
Play by Play
The Hawks and Prairie Stars went point for point to open the match. Neither team could break away as the score sat tied at 13-13 midway through the opening set. UIS proceeded to go on a 3-0 run to take their largest lead and force QU head coach
Mark Jones to take his first timeout. The Hawks came out of the timeout inspired, scoring the next five points behind kills from
Sarah Brown and
Emily Rehagen to go up 18-16. The Prairie Stars grabbed a one-point lead before
Stephanie Mizeur slammed down a kill to tie it at 22-22. UIS went on to score the final three points and take the first set, 25-22.
The second set started much like the first, with neither team able to gain a sturdy advantage until UIS went on a 3-0 run to go up 15-10. The Hawks answered with a 5-0 run of their own to tie it for the third time in the set. Mizeur came alive and fired three kills during that span. QU later faced set point, down 24-22. Two Prairie Star attack errors allowed the Hawks to tie the score once again. QU was unable to take advantage of the UIS mistakes, as the home team collected the next two points to win the set, 26-24.
Quincy jumped out to a 10-6 lead after back-to-back kills from Rehagen in the third set. The Hawks lead was short lived, however, as UIS put together a 6-0 run to go ahead 17-14. The Prairie Stars never let the momentum change back to the Hawks, as they went on to take the third set 25-19 and a 3-0 victory.
