Quincy 3, West Virginia State 0

The Hawks came out firing on all cylinders in the opening set of the Union Classic. QU never trailed after jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Back-to-back kills by Sarah Brown and Stephanie Mizeur stretched the lead to 5-1. West Virginia State cut the score to two before the Hawks took over for good. Quincy went on a 4-0 run capped off with an Emma Holt service ace and an Emily Rehagen kill. QU dominated the rest of the way, taking the first set 25-14.

The second set was played closely with neither team able to build more than a two-point cushion until midway through the frame. The Yellow Jackets used a five-point run to go up 17-11 and looked to pull away. The Hawks stayed strong and battled back. QU went on a run of their own, highlighted by back-to-back kills from Alaina Rothermich. This cut the West Virginia State lead to one point. The Hawks took advantage of two Yellow Jacket errors to take a 21-20 lead. West Virginia State would not regain the lead as Emily Rehagen recorded the final point with her fifth kill of the frame. QU won set two 25-22.

The Hawks trailed 15-10 in the third set but chipped away at the deficit. QU used a 4-0 run to take a 16-15 lead after a kill by junior right side Emma Lynch. The teams traded points until Brown and Mizeur notched back-to-back kills to put the Hawks up three. The Yellow Jackets cut QU's lead to two points before Brown closed out the match for Quincy with her 11th kill. Quincy won the third set 25-22.

Quincy 3, Union University 2

The Bulldogs built a 9-6 lead in the first set before Quincy scored five unanswered points to take the lead 11-9. Emily Rehagen, Makayla Knoblauch and Baylie Stephens each knocked down kills during that span. The lead was short lived, however, as Union countered with a 7-1 run to regain a 16-12 advantage. The Hawks turned the tables once again late in the set and used a 5-0 run to go up 20-18. The final lead change of the set went in favor of Union, as they took seven of the last eight points to win the first set 25-21.

In the following set, Quincy used a 4-0 surge to break away from a 6-6 tie. The Hawks would lead for the remainder of the set. The Bulldogs did stay within striking distance only trailing 13-10 before QU went on a 7-2 run. The run allowed the Hawks to build their largest lead, 20-12. Union got back within 24-19, but Alaina Rothermich ended the set with a kill to even the match at a set apiece.

The Hawks fell behind 3-1 in the third set. A slew of Bulldog errors followed by kills from Sarah Brown and Stephanie Mizeur prompted QU to go on an 8-0 run. The Bulldogs fought back and got within one at 21-20 late in the set. Emily Rehagen put down her 11th kill of the match to get the Hawks to set point. A Union attack error gave the Hawks the third set, 25-22.

QU jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the fourth set before Union strung together five straight points to take the lead. The teams traded points after that, with neither team leading by more than three until two Hawk errors allowed the Bulldogs to go up 19-15. Union used that momentum to take the fourth set, 25-18 forcing a decisive fifth set.

Quincy scored the first three points in the final set and held the lead for the entire stanza. Stephanie Mizeur hammered home her 11th kill to give the Hawks their largest lead, 10-6. The four-point lead remained as Mizeur and Rehagen knocked down back-to-back kills to take the set 15-11 and win the match for the Hawks.
