OZARK, Mo. – The Quincy University baseball team was handed their first loss in the GLVC Tournament on Friday night (May 10). The Hawks were held scoreless in eight innings as they fell to Illinois Springfield 6-1.

In the first inning, Stroud surrendered a two-out hit up the middle, but he left the runner there by striking out the next batter looking. The Hawks came to the plate to face the GLVC Pitcher of the Year, Andrew Dean.
QU managed a lead-off walk from
Chandler Purcell, but the next three outs were recorded.
The Prairie Stars threatened in the top of the second. The lead off man was hit by a pitch then advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Another walk put runners on first and second with one out.
Stroud closed the door on the scoring chance with back-to-back strikeouts.
Quincy put two runners on base in the home half of the second inning.
Jacob Kalusniak and
TJ Tamaccio got base hits but both were stranded. The game remained scoreless after two innings.
In the top of the third, three walks led off the inning for UIS. The first out was recorded on a pop up to the pitcher.
With one out, UIS scored first as Stroud walked in a run. A single by the next batter brought in another run to make the score 2-0.
A hit by pitch allowed the Prairie Stars to take a 3-0 lead with one out. The Hawks were forced to go to the bullpen early in the contest as
Karl Hirsch came into the game.
An RBI double kept the inning going and extended the UIS lead to 5-0 with runners on second and third base.
The inning continued with a sacrifice bunt to the right side. This made it two outs, but another run came in. UIS led 6-0 going to the bottom of the third.
Chandler Purcell led off the bottom of the third with a base hit, but the next three batters went down following the single.
Karl Hirsch came back out for the fourth and worked a 1-2-3 inning to bring the Hawks back up to bat.
QU quickly made three outs as the score remained 6-0 after four innings of play.
Hirsch got a strike out and two pop-outs en route to another scoreless frame in the fifth.
Quincy's offense struggled to find their footing in the first five innings as UIS limited the QU line up to just three hits. The score stood at 6-0 going to the sixth inning.
Hirsch once again let his defense work behind him as he recorded three straight groundouts in the top of the sixth.
The Hawks got a runner on base after a one-out walk to
Jeff Hightower. A line out and ground out ended the inning keeping QU off the board.
The next best chance for Quincy came in their final at bat. Two walks led off the inning followed by a strike out.
Another walk left the bases loaded and one out. UIS made a pitching change hoping to keep the shut out intact.
After the change,
Chandler Purcell struck out swinging on a pitch in the dirt. The ball got past the catcher and allowed the runner to score from third. The score was 6-1 with two outs.
The game ended in the next at bat after a ground out to the third basemen. QU fell 6-1.
