Tennis Splits Midweek Match With Cardinals

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University tennis teams' split with William Jewell Tuesday afternoon (April 9). The men's team defeated the Cardinals 5-2 and the women's team fell in a close match 4-3.

Women's

The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead after sweeping in doubles action. Makaela Hampton and Nicole Lao led off with a 6-4 victory at the No.1 doubles spot. 

The pairings of Anna Konczak and Marta Caballero Garcia, along with Abby Moore and Rita Kanaeva, both won by a score of 6-3 to claim the doubles point.

In singles action, Lao nearly pulled off the comeback victory in three sets at No.2 singles. She fell 0-6, 6-1, 1-6.

Konczak grinded out a tight match at No.4 singles, defeating her opponent 6-4, 7-5. 

The Hawks picked up their third point at the No.5 spot. Moore only dropped one game, winning by a score of 6-0, 6-1.

QU was unable to add another point and fell 4-3.

Men's

In doubles action, the men were able to clinch the important opening point. Samuele Contestabile and Dane Mechali were victorious at No.2 doubles, winning a competitive match 7-5.

The pairing of Patrick Anderson and Collin Adams defeated their opponents 6-3 to give the Hawks a 1-0 advantage heading into singles action.

QU took momentum into singles play. Brenden Everhart pulled off an impressive come from behind victory at No.1 singles, winning 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Contestabile cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No.2 spot and Eric Weiler sealed No.3 singles by a score of 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). 

Mechali picked up his 11th singles victory of the season with a 6-2, 6-1 win to give the Hawks their fifth point. QU defeated William Jewell 5-2.

Next up for the Hawks
The Hawks tennis teams' will host Lewis & Clark Community College on Friday (April 12) for Senior Day. First serve is set for noon.
