Hawks Win Fifth Straight With 9-5 Victory Over Truman

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Quincy University baseball team won its fifth straight game with a 9-5 win over the Truman State Bulldogs on Tuesday (April 9th).

Play by Play
After being held to just one hit in the first two innings, the Hawks were able to produce in the third inning.

Nolan Snyder led off by reaching on an error by the Bulldogs' shortstop. Chandler Purcell brought him around with a double to right center. QU jumped ahead 1-0. The left fielder went 4 for 4 in his return to the Hawk line up after missing Sunday's game.

Cody Birdsong followed with a single to right field allowing Purcell to advance to third with no one out. Lance Logsdon grounded into a double play towards the right side of the infield, but Purcell came home to make the score 2-0 QU.

Jeff Hightower capped off the inning with his 9th home run of the season to bring the score to 3-0.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the home half of the 3rd inning. A solo home run made the score 3-1.

Quincy's bats put up another crooked number in the next inning to answer. The Hawks scored three runs, all with two outs, to make the score 6-1.

Nolan Snyder delivered a double which allowed Justin Eads to score, Cody Birdsong drove in Snyder for the second run of the inning, and Lance Logsdon singled up the middle to end the scoring run.

Starting pitcher Dalton Overstreet kept TSU off the board in the 4th and 5th innings to bring the Hawk offense back to the plate in the top of the 6th.

Quincy added another run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Birdsong which was enough for Nolan Snyder to tag and score from third base. The Hawks led 7-1 after six innings of play.

In the bottom of the 6th, Overstreet worked around a lead off single by following it with two quick outs. A walk put runners on 1st and 2nd, but the 6'2" right-hander got out of the inning after a foul-out at 3rd base.

This was Overstreet's final inning as he threw six innings allowing just one run on three hits with six strikeouts and a pair of walks.

John Hurayt came out of the bullpen in the 7th inning and surrendered just one hit with two strikeouts in his inning of work. The Hawks still led 7-1 going to the 8th inning.

In the bottom of the 8th, Truman State made a late surge. Three straight walks to start the inning left the bases loaded with no outs.

Two errors led to three runs which made the score 7-4 with no outs. A single to right field led to another run narrowing the QU lead to just two runs 7-5.

The Hawks were able to get out of the inning still holding the 7-5 lead.

In their final at bat, QU delivered a response to Truman's three run inning. Catcher Jacob Kalusniak drew a one out walk and eventually came in to score after three wild pitches by the Bulldogs' pitcher. Quincy now led 8-5.

Michael Nielsen put a man in scoring position with a double down the right field line. Cole Cimarolli came in to pinch run for the designated hitter with one out in the inning.

After a TSU pitching change, Justin Eads singled through the right side which allowed a speedy Cimarolli to score from 2nd. The Hawks led 9-5 going into the bottom of the 9th.

Left-hander Sam Stephens came on for the 9th inning to seal the game. Stephens surrendered a one-out walk but closed the door with back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
