QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team responded from an 11-6 game one loss to Truman State with a convincing game two win 11-0 on Wednesday (April 3rd).
Game 1
The Bulldogs offense came out swinging in the first game of the doubleheader. In the top of the 2nd, Truman State led off with a double. Back-to-back fly outs gave the Hawks two outs. The next batter drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single. Truman led 1-0.
In the bottom of the 2nd, QU answered. Catcher
Jeff Hightower led things off with a home run to left field. The score was tied 1-1.
Truman State pushed back in the 4th inning. The Bulldogs plated four runs on three hits and a Quincy error. TSU led 5-1 going to the bottom of the inning.
The Hawks had an answer to the 4-run inning. A walk and two singles put men on all three bases with no outs.
TJ Tamaccio drove in a pair with a single to left. QU trailed 5-3.
Carter Naughton added another run with a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-4 with one out.
Chandler Purcell scored Tamaccio with a fielder's choice to the right side which tied the game 5-5.
The Bulldogs responded once again with a big 5th inning. Truman pieced together six hits which led to five runs. TSU led 10-5 after five innings.
In the 6th inning, both teams added runs to make the score 11-6.
Cole Evans scored on a wild pitch for QU.
That score would remain for the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings as the Hawks dropped game one 11-6.
Game 2
In the second game of the day, Quincy came out with a heightened sense of urgency. Starting pitcher
Dalton Overstreet attacked the Bulldog line up which had 17 hits in game one.
Overstreet let up an infield single in the first but did not allow another hit until the 5th inning.
The Hawks' offense backed their pitcher with early run support.
Chandler Purcell scored
Jacob Kalusniak and Tamaccio on a bases loaded single to center field in the 2nd inning. QU held a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the 4th, Quincy added to their lead. Two quick outs led off the inning followed by back-to-back walks. With runners on 1st and 2nd,
Jeff Hightower came to the plate. The designated hitter hit his second home run of the day deep to left center to give the Hawks a 5-0 lead.
QU's offense picked up where they left off in the following inning. The Hawks plated a run on a sacrifice fly by
Cody Birdsong to bring the score to 6-0.
Freshman
Lance Logsdon drilled a 3-run home run to left center to give QU a commanding 9-0 lead. It was Logsdon's fourth home run of the season.
Overstreet tossed a 1-2-3 6th inning to bring the QU bats right back to the plate. In the bottom of the 6th, the Hawks delivered the knockout blow by scoring a pair of runs on a RBI double by Naughton and a SAC fly from Purcell.
The right-hander from Hannibal, Missouri came out in the 7th and tossed another quick inning to seal the seven inning victory 11-0.
