Heckman's Big Day Leads Hawks To Sweep

HANNIBAL, Mo. - The Quincy University softball team swept Hannibal-LaGrange Friday (April 26) behind a five-hit performance from Morgan Heckman. The Hawks defeated the Trojans 10-2 in game one before completing the sweep with a 12-2 victory in game two.

Play by Play

Game 1

The Hawks led off the first game of the day in a big way. Remi Ferguson came to the plate with one out in the top of the first inning and belted her 6th home run of the season over the center field fence to give QU an early 1-0 lead.

Morgan Heckman and Kay Bettendorf followed with back-to-back singles. Kylie Powers scored both runners with a two-RBI single to make the score 3-0. 

Katelyn Gratza later recorded a two-RBI single of her own to give Sara Demuth a 5-0 lead before stepping into the circle.

Demuth sat the Trojans down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first to bring the Hawks back to the plate.

Heckman extended the lead to 6-0 in the top of the second by ripping her 11th home run of the season to center field. 

The senior pitcher from Shell Rock, Iowa kept the Hannibal bats at bay in the 2nd and 3rd, allowing no hits through the first three innings of play.

QU put up three insurance runs in the top of the fourth. Megan Sharpshair connected on a two-RBI triple to deep right field to put the Hawks up 8-0.

Audrey Hermann followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 9-0.

The Trojans scored two runs off three hits in the bottom of the frame to cut the Hawks lead to 9-2.

Quincy added one more run in the top of the fifth inning. Heckman drew a one-out walk and later scored on an error by the shortstop, making the score 10-2.

That score stood as Demuth finished off the 9th complete game of her career, allowing two runs off four hits and one strike out.

Game 2

The Hawks jumped out to an early lead once again in game two. QU put up three runs off four hits in the top of the second inning. 

Megan Sharpshair got things started with a double down the right field line. Audrey Hermann plated Sharpshair with an RBI single to left field. Katelyn Gratza followed with an RBI double to left center.

Roni Wingerter later recorded her first career RBI by plating Gratza with a single to right center field. QU led 3-0 after two innings of play.

The Hawks tripled their lead with a big third inning.

Quincy scored three runs on RBI singles from Hermann, Sharpshair, and Kylie Powers, making the score 6-0.

Courtney Kernich later came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. The sophomore right fielder answered the call with a bases clearing, three-RBI double to deep left field to extend the lead to 9-0.

Morgan Tanksley cruised through the first four innings, only allowing one hit.

The Trojans broke through in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs off one hit to cut the lead to 9-2.

QU answered with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Morgan Heckman made the score 10-2 with an RBI single and later scored on an error by the second baseman. Remi Ferguson scored on the same error to put the Hawks up 12-2 heading into the bottom of the frame.

Tanksley sat Hannibal down 1-2-3 to complete the Friday sweep.
