SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Quincy University softball team split its doubleheader with Drury University Friday afternoon (April 19). The Hawks fell short 10-9 in game one and defeated the No.10 team in the Midwest region 6-3 in game two.
Play by Play
Game 1
The Hawks struck first in game one.
Remi Ferguson got things started in the top of the first with a double to left center.
Morgan Heckman advanced Ferguson to third with a single to right field.
Heckman stole second on the next pitch to put two runners in scoring position with just one out.
Kay Bettendorf came to the plate and scored Ferguson with an RBI sacrifice fly to left field. Heckman later scored on an error by the third baseman to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers answered in the bottom of the frame. Drury led off with back-to-back to hits to put two runners on. A three-run home run to left field gave them a 3-2 lead after one inning of play.
The home team used their second three-run homer of the game in the bottom of the second to double the lead at 6-2.
QU fought back and tied the game in the top of the third. Heckman walked to lead off the inning. Bettendorf and
Kylie Powers hit back-to-back singles to load the bases.
Heckman scored again on an error by the first baseman and
Audrey Hermann followed by roping a two RBI double to left center to make the score 6-5.
The Hawks tied the game at 6-6 with an RBI ground out by
Jessica Poore.
Drury scored two runs off of three hits and a QU error in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead 8-6.
QU cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth. Ferguson reached base on a fielder's choice and Heckman singled to right field to put two on with one out.
Ferguson scored on an error by the second baseman to cut the lead to 8-7.
Alex DeVaney sat the Panthers down 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the inning to bring the Hawks back to the plate.
Quincy was unable to score in the fifth and the Panthers added two runs off of four hits to extend their lead to 10-7.
Morgan Tanksley came in to relieve DeVaney in the bottom of the sixth and recorded three outs without giving up a hit.
QU did not go quietly in the final inning.
Megan Sharpshair hit a two-run home run to left field with two outs to cut the Panther lead to 10-9.Â
This score stood as the Hawks were unable to overcome the deficit with the late surge.Â
Game 2
Both teams remained silent through the first two innings of play in game two.
Mac Kenzie Collier kept the Panthers scoreless through two, allowing only two hits and striking out three.
The Hawks took the first lead of the game in the top of the third.
Remi Ferguson hit a two-out triple and scored on an RBI double by Morgna Heckman to put the Hawks up 1-0.
QU extended the lead in the top of the fifth.
Kay Bettendorf smoked a two RBIÂ double to left center and
Kylie Powers got in on the action with a two-out RBI single to make the score 4-0.
The Panthers used an RBI single in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 4-1.
Remi Ferguson and
Morgan Heckman led off the seventh inning with back-to-back home runs to give the Hawks two insurance runs. QU led 6-1.
Drury scored two runs off two hits in their final at bat before Collier recorded the final out to give the Hawks a 6-3 game two victory.
