ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team saw its season come to an end on Saturday night (April 13) as the Hawks fell to #7 Lewis, 25-15, 25-18, 25-11, in the MIVA Tournament quarterfinals in Romeoville.
Play by Play
1st Set
Both teams traded points early on in the first set until the Flyers used a four point run to take a 9-4 lead.Â
The Hawks responded with a
Brendon Estrada kill and back-to-back service aces by
Adam Rogan to cut the lead to 12-9.Â
Lewis scored four of the next five points to take a 16-10 lead and force a QU timeout.
Stevie Bresser slammed home a kill out of the timeout and the Hawks took advantage of a Flyer attack error to cut the lead to 16-12.
QU was unable to draw any closer as Lewis scored nine of the last 12 points to take the opening set 25-15.
2nd Set
The Hawks used another Flyer error to score the first point of the second set and jump out to a 1-0 lead.Â
Lewis answered by scoring eight of the next 11 points to take an 8-4 lead.
QU used back-to-back kills from
Omari Wheeler and Rogan to cut the lead to 8-7.
The Flyers tried to pull away, but back-to-back service aces from Estrada kept the Hawks within one point.
Lewis later used a 3-0 run to extend their lead to 16-12 and force Quincy head coach
Gavin Mueller to take his first timeout of the set.
The Hawks scored the first point out of the timeout to cut the lead to three, but were unable to stop the home team's momentum as the Flyers took the second set 25-18.
3rd Set
The third set sat tied at 4-4 early on. The Hawks took advantage of three Flyer errors and Wheeler hammered home a kill to stay all square.Â
Lewis scored ten of the next 14 points to pull ahead 14-8.Â
QU used another Wheeler kill to stop a four point run from the Flyers, making the score 14-9.
Lewis responded by scoring five of the next six points to take a 19-10 lead, forcing a QU timeout.
The timeout did not slow the down the Flyers as they went on to win the third set 25-11 and take a 3-0 victory.Â
