LEESBURG, Fl. - The Quincy University softball team picked up two wins on Friday (Mar. 8) over Lake Erie College and the University of the Sciences at the NTC Spring Games in Florida. The Hawks defeated the Storm 9-1 and then defeated the Devils 2-1 in game two.
Game 1
The Hawks got things started early as
Kylie Powers and
Morgan Heckman hit back-to-back singles.
Remi Ferguson then reached on an error which allowed Powers to come around and give QU a 1-0 lead.
Next up was
Jessica Poore who drew a walk to load the bases. Later on in the inning, Ferguson and Heckman would score on a
Courtney Kernich single to left field. This gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead.
Poore and Kernich would score on a single by
Audrey Hermann who would come all the way around to score after two errors and some miscommunication by the Storm, extending the lead to 6-0.
QU kept things rolling in the third after Poore singled and Kernich doubled. This would put two runners on for
Megan Sharpshair who hit a scorcher over the right field fence to make the score 9-0.
Alex DeVaney kept the Storm at bay allowing no hits through the first three innings.Â
Lake Erie scored their lone run on a homerun in the fourth, cutting the deficit the 9-1. Kernich would give the Hawks the momentum right back on the very next play after making a spectacular catch that robbed a homerun.Â
The Hawks would use the run rule to defeat the Storm 9-1 in 5 innings.
DeVaney went 5 innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out four.
Sharpshair and Kernich combined for three hits and five RBIs in the game.
