Hawks Fall Short In Game One; Soar Past Flyers In Game Two

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team split its doubleheader with Lewis University Sunday (Mar. 24). The Hawks fell 2-1 in game one and responded in game two with an 8-5 win.

Play by Play

Game 1

The Hawks saw a pitchers duel in the first game of the day.

Both teams were silent through the first two innings. Mac Kenzie Collier kept the Flyers scoreless through two, allowing one hit and striking out two.

The Flyers were the first to strike, using a two-run home run in the third to take a 2-0 lead.

This was Collier's only blemish as she threw three scoreless innings to finish the game.

QU fought back in the top of the sixth inning. Morgan Heckman hit a deep shot over the center field fence to cut the Lewis lead to 2-1.

The Hawks were unable to push any more runs across as the Flyers retired the last five QU batters. Quincy fell 2-1 in game one.

Game 2

QU responded in game two. Alex DeVaney kept the Flyers scoreless through two innings, allowing just one hit.

The Hawks scored first in the top of the third inning with an RBI single by Megan Sharpshair to take a 1-0 lead.

Kay Bettendorf plated Sharpshair with an RBI groundout later in the inning to extend the QU lead to 2-0.

Lewis answered in the bottom of the frame, scoring four runs on two hits. The Flyers took a 4-2 lead.

Sara Demuth came in to relieve DeVaney and recorded the final out to get the Hawks out of the inning.

The Hawks got the bats going again in the top of the fifth. Courteny Kernich led off with a bunting single. Dana Walsh reached on a fielding error by the shortstop to put runners on first and second for Katelyn Gratza.

Gratza singled to left field and advanced to third on an error by the left fielder that scored Kernich and Walsh, allowing the Hawks to tie it at 4-4.

Bettendorf scored Gratza with an RBI single to retake the lead at 5-4. Heckman came to the plate and hit her second homer of the day to deep center field. QU led 7-4.

The Hawks added one more run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Audrey Hermann to extend the lead to 8-4.

The Flyers did not go quietly as they added one run in the bottom of the frame to make it a three run game. The tying run came to plate with just one out.

Demuth was able to force a ground ball double play to end the game and give the Hawks an 8-5 victory.
