Baseball Sweeps Saturday Twin Bill With UMSL

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team picked up a pair of GLVC wins over the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday (March 23). The Hawks exploded for 16 runs in a 16-2 game one win and also took the second game of the day 7-2.

Game 1
Quincy imposed their will right out of the gates. The first three Hawk batters reached base before first basemen Michael Nielsen came to the plate. Nielsen hit his first homer of the year in grand fashion with a grand slam to right center. QU went up early 4-0.

Starting pitcher, Riley Martin, kept the Tritons off the board through the first three innings before the offense added more runs in the bottom of the third.

Cody Birdsong led off with a single followed by a Nielsen walk. Lance Logsdon loaded the bases with a single through the right side with no outs.

Jeff Hightower brought in a pair of runs with a double down the left field line. Quincy led 6-0.

Senior third basemen TJ Tamaccio scored Logsdon and Hightower with a single to left center. The Hawks held a 8-0 lead.

The bats were not done in the inning. Carter Naughton unloaded a moon shot to left field for his second home run of the year to give QU a 10-0 advantage.

Missouri-St. Louis ended the shut out in the top of the 4th inning. the Tritons plated an unearned run to make the score 10-1.

In the bottom of the 5th, the Hawks had another big inning. QU scored six more runs on six hits including home runs by Nolan Snyder and Logsdon. After five innings QU led 16-1.

UMSL scored another run in the 6th, but Quincy remained firmly in control and won 16-2 in seven innings. Six different QU batters had multiple hits in the game paced by Tamaccio who had three.

Riley Martin tossed six innings and allowed one earned run on just two hits with eight strikeouts.

Game 2
Tamaccio got the Hawks on the board first in game two. The senior from Boca Raton, Florida hit an RBI single to score Jacob Kalusniak and give Quincy an early 1-0 lead.

Game two starter, John Hurayt, only allowed one hit through four innings, but the Tritons broke through in the 5th. UMSL plated two runs after a home run and a RBI single gave the Tritons their first lead of the day.

That lead was short lived as the Hawks responded in the home half of the 5th inning. Chandler Purcell quickly tied it with a home run to left field. Michael Nielsen later followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to give QU the lead back 3-2.

The bats kept rolling and added three more runs after an RBI double from Lance Logsdon and a pair of RBI singles by Jacob Kalusniak and Cole Evans. This gave Quincy a 6-2 lead after five.

Hurayt was relieved after two batters reached base with one out. First out of the bullpen in game two was Karl Hirsch

Hirsch got out of the inning unscathed as the Hawks remained in the lead 6-2.

In the 8th inning, Carter Naughton added an RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Hawks led 7-2.
