KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Quincy University women's basketball team did not have a scorer in double figures as the Hawks fell 65-46 to Truman State University on Saturday (Feb. 9).
Play by Play
1st Half
Both the Hawks and Bulldogs struggled to find a rhythm in the first quarter. Neither team scored in the first four minutes of the game.
Truman State broke the silence with a 3-pointer with a little over six minutes to play.
Quincy could not find answers from the floor. The Hawks made just two of fourteen shots in the first ten minutes.
Jessica Merino and
Ella Gobald were the ones who connected to put the Hawks on the board. Gobald knocked in her shot from three.
Fortunately, Quincy kept themselves in the game with clinching defense of their own. Truman only led 12-5 going to the second quarter.
The pace of play increased in quarter number two. QU got a quick steal by
Grace Schraufnagel on the opening possession.
Schraufnagel was unable to convert a jump shot on the other end, but
Lexi Doyle corralled the offensive board. Doyle's put back good to get the Hawks' second quarter started.
Quincy cut the Bulldogs' lead to three after a 3-pointer by
Maddie Spagnola and a basket from
Michaela Gronewold. The score was 15-12 with 6:40 left.
Truman State went on a 7-0 run to gain distance from QU 21-12.
Kennedy Prince ended the run with a three with 4:11 to play.
Quincy was able to cut Truman's lead to two after a 7-0 run.
Maddie Spagnola,
Jessica Merino, and
Ella Gobald all scored to make the score 24-22 with under two minutes to play.
At the half, QU trailed 32-25.
2nd Half
Quincy's offensive struggles returned in the third quarter. The Hawks converted on three of thirteen shots. The Bulldogs also hit the glass by out-rebounding QU 12-4.
This allowed Truman State to expand its lead to 50-35 going to the final quarter.
The Bulldogs gained their largest lead with seven minutes to play in the fourth. In three minutes, Truman led 59-37 after a 9-2 run.
Quincy was unable to cut into that deficit and fell 65-46.
