ST. CHARLES, Mo. - A marathon third set proved to be the difference in the Quincy Hawks men's volleyball match on Sunday (Feb. 3). The Hawks fell to Lourdes University 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 33-35, 13-25).
Play by Play
Quincy got started off on the right foot in the opening set, taking a 5-2 lead over Lourdes.
The Hawks maintained this lead as QU extended its lead to 13-9 midway through the opening set.
Lourdes mounted an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the set at 17-13.
Quincy attempted to trim the lead, bringing the score to 22-19 late in set one.
However, Lourdes' 8-0 run was enough to help them secure a 25-20 set one victory.
2nd Set
The Hawks looked to switch the momentum back in their favor in the second set of the match.
The second set was a battle between both squads as neither team was able to gain more than a two-point advantage until the score stood at 21-21.

Zach Reider and a pair of attack errors gave QU a 24-21 lead
The Hawks used this run to secure a 25-22 set win to tie the match at 1-1.
3rd Set
Lourdes scored the third set's first five points, causing Quincy to take a timeout.
Early on, Lourdes maintained their lead at 11-7.
A 4-0 Hawks scoring run tied the set at 11-11.
Zach Reider and
Jacob Sheets both recorded kills in during the run.
The 4-0 run was the start of QU scoring eight of sets next nine points as the Hawks took a 15-12 lead over Lourdes.
Quincy pushed its lead to 21-17 and looked to gain a 2-1 set advantage over Lourdes.
The Gray Wolves responded with a 5-0 run and gave Lourdes a 22-21 lead late in the third set.
In turn, Quincy responded by taking a 24-23 lead as the Gray Wolves faced set point.
Lourdes scored the set's next two points and the Hawks now faced set point.
The Hawks and Gray Wolves traded points until the score read 31-30 in favor of Lourdes. Quincy faced six set points during this stretch.
A kill by
Omari Wheeler and a service ace by
Jacob Sheets gave QU a 32-31 lead.
The Gray Wolves were able to recover, scoring four of the set's final five points to take a 35-33 set win.
4th Set
Quincy was unable to recover following the grueling third set.
Lourdes jumped out to a 10-3 lead and never relinquished its advantage.
The Gray Wolves took the fourth set 25-13 en route to a 3-1 win over the Hawks.
