QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy women's basketball team battled with the #15 Lewis' Flyers on Thursday night, but QU could not pull off the upset. Lewis pulled away with a 101-64 win.
Play by Play
1st Half
The Flyers started quickly in this GLVC matchup. Lewis opened with a pair of 3-pointers to move ahead 6-2.
A full-court press by Lewis applied pressure to QU's offense. The Flyers took advantage of two early turnovers with a 12-0 run. Lewis went ahead 15-2 with seven minutes left forcing an early timeout by the Hawks.
Kennedy Prince connected on a 3-pointer later in the quarter to make the score 20-8 Lewis.
Ella Gobald answered a made basket by Lewis with a long 2-pointer to bring the score to 22-10.
Lewis scored the next seven points to make the score 27-10, but
Michaela Gronewold made a 3-pointer to end the run and cut Lewis' lead to 14.
The Flyers made a pair of free throws then the Hawks got another 3-pointer from
Ella Gobald to make the score 29-16. That score stood going into the second quarter.
Maddie Spagnola got the first basket of the quarter for the Hawks with an and-one layup. She made the free throw and brought the score to 30-19.
Spagnola scored again with a mid-range jumper, and
Alexa Low added a basket on the following possession to cut their deficit to 30-23. The Flyers scored and converted a 3-point play to extend the lead back to double digits 33-23.
The Flyers pulled back ahead with a 10-2 run. The score sat at 45-25 half way through quarter two.
To end the half, Lewis outscored the Hawks 14-4 to take a 59-29 lead into the locker room.
2nd Half
Maddie Spagnola made the first basket out of the break. The Flyers got things going after the made basket. Lewis made a 7-2 run to push their lead to 66-33.
QU scored the next four of five including a second chance bucket by
Lexi Doyle. The score moved to 67-37.
Ella Gobald later connected again from deep with less than four minutes in the third.
Lexi Doyle added a mid-range shot to bring the score to 73-44.
The Hawks trailed 78-49 going into the final quarter.
Alexa Low had offensive rebound put-back lay-up at the third quarter buzzer.
In the fourth, the Flyers remained firmly in control. Quincy was unable to chip away at the deficit and fell 101-64.
