QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy women's basketball team played its final game of the 2019 season on Saturday afternoon against Indianapolis (March 1). The Hawks were unable to defeat the Greyhounds 60-47.
Play by Play
1st Half
Scoring was sparse at the start of the final regular season game for both teams. Over half way through the first quarter the score was only 4-2 Indianapolis.
Senior
Taylor Hickey gave QU a 5-4 lead with 3-pointer as 2:40 remained in the first.
At the end of the low scoring first quarter, the Greyhounds held a 8-7 lead.
Aleksandra Petrovic nailed a three to begin the second quarter and give Quincy a 10-8 lead. Indianapolis scored the next four points to regain the lead.
Michaela Gronewold notched the score at twelve with a strong drive to the basket.
At the five minute media timeout, the Greyhounds held a 17-14 lead over the Hawks. Indianapolis extended their lead to 20-16, but a 3-pointer and a lay up by
Maddie Spagnola gave QU the lead 21-20.
At the buzzer,
Taylor Hickey made a long 2-point shot to give Quincy a 25-24 lead going into the locker room.
2nd Half
The Hawks opened the second half with a 6-2 run to take a 31-26 lead.
Grace Schraufnagel added a pair of baskets.
The Greyhounds answered by setting up a full-court press which led to back-to-back QU turnovers. Indianapolis took advantage with a pair of baskets to make the score 31-30.
With just under five minutes left in the third, both teams sat tied 34-34.
Indianapolis scored the next six points to move ahead 40-34 with two minutes left in the quarter.
Jessica Merino added a pair of free throws to make the score 40-36 as the game moved to the final quarter.
A quick turnover by Indy led to a fast break lay up for Hickey. The Hawks now trailed by only two.
The Greyhounds went on a 7-0 run to move ahead 49-40.
Michaela Gronewold made a shot from deep to end the run. The score was 49-43 with under five minutes to play
Another 3-pointer by the Greyhounds brought the score to 52-43 with 3:49 remaining, and head coach
Jeni Garber called timeout.
Indianapolis remained in the lead for the final three minutes as QU fell in the final game of the season 60-47.
