QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball went jab-for-jab with the leading team in the conference on Thursday night (Feb. 28). The game came down to the final two possessions as the #19 ranked Lewis Flyers squeaked past the Hawks 69-67.
Play by Play
1st half
Lewis was the first to strike with a 3-pointer by leading scorer Kendale McCullum.
Aziz Fadika answered with a bucket for the Hawks.
Demetrius Houston collected two early steals to help give QU an early 8-5 lead. Lewis scored before the media timeout to make it a one-point game.
After the break, Lewis connected on a three to take the lead 10-8.
Demetrius Houston knocked down a step-back jumper to tie the score.
Robby Dosier got in on the action with a made shot from deep on his first attempt. The 3-pointer gave QU a 13-12 lead.
Demetrius Houston made a long distance shot to push Quincy's lead to 17-12 with nine minutes in the half.
The Hawks gained their largest lead at the time after a strong take by
Aziz Fadika. Fadika converted on an and-one play which fired up the crowd in Pepsi Arena. The score sat at 23-15 QU with six minutes left.
Over the next four minutes, the Flyers outscored QU 12-4 to tie the score 27-27. Head coach
Ryan Hellenthal called timeout with 1:18 remaining in the half.
The Hawks got a fast break basket by
Jah-Kobe Womack to put the Hawks ahead 29-27. That score stood as both teams went into halftime.
2nd Half
Demetrius Houston started things off with a deep three from the top of the key. At the first media timeout, the score sat tied 35-35.
QU moved ahead with a 5-0 run that included a short basket by Fadika on a nice feed from
Jah-Kobe Womack. Lewis scored on the following possession to end the run and bring the tally to 40-37.
Fadika again showed his strength in the paint on the next possession. The big man from Texas converted another and-one play after being fouled on his layup attempt. The Hawks led 43-37 with thirteen minutes remaining.
The Flyers quickly responded after a pair of three pointers from their leading scorer Kendale McCullum. With a little under twelve minutes in the game, QU led 47-45.
Under ten minutes in the game, Quincy held a 51-48 lead. Lewis got a basket off an inbounds play to cut the QU lead to one.
Lewis tied the game at 53-53 after a made shot from beyond the arc. Womack made his shot attempt on the next possession to put the Hawks back in front.
A turnover by Lewis turned into points for Quincy on a fast break layup by Womack. The Flyers called timeout as their deficit was bumped to five 62-57. Five minutes remained in the game.
Lewis tightened the score yet again after a 3-point play. Quincy still held the lead 62-60.
A corner three by the Flyers with three minutes to play tied the score 63-63. Womack quickly gave the Hawks the lead again with a made jumper.
The Flyers gained some momentum with a rim rattling dunk to tie the score once more 65-65. Only 1:54 remained in the second half as QU called timeout.
Aziz Fadika put the Hawks in the lead with a pair of free throws, but the Flyers answered to notch the score.
The game remained tied at 67-67 when Lewis got the ball with 13.6 seconds left. Lewis called a timeout to draw up one last shot. The Flyers drove to the rim and a foul was called.
Donovan Oliver made both attempts to make the score 69-67 with 4.6 seconds remaining.
Ryan Briscoe's three point attempt rattled in and out from the top of the key as the Flyers escaped with a two-point win.
