QUINCY, Ill. – The women's basketball team lost in their return to Pepsi Arena on Saturday (Feb. 23) to the Truman State Bulldogs 79-56. Quincy was coming off five straight road games.
Play by Play
1st Half
The Hawks were out of sync in the opening quarter. Quincy had three turnovers in the first three possessions on miscued passes.
Truman State (21-5, 12-4 GLVC) took advantage by taking an early 8-0 lead. The Hawks got on the board with a bucket from
Michaela Gronewold shortly after.
By the end of the quarter, the Hawks made the score 19-12 after a 3-pointer by
Taylor Hickey. The Bulldogs rallied before the end of the first quarter with six straight points. Sloane Totta of Truman made a basket as time expired in the first to bring the score to 25-12.
Quincy scored five points in the first two minutes of the quarter.
Alexa Low added two points and Gronewold cashed in from three. The deficit was eight points.
The two teams traded 3-pointers including another from Gronewold to make the score 27-20 with 6:40 remaining. Truman then scored the next eight points to go ahead 35-20.
The Hawks cut the lead to nine after a fastbreak basket by
Jessica Merino with three minutes left. The score by Merino made the count 37-28.
Before the half, TSU ended the quarter on a 9-4 run which brought the score to 46-32.
2nd Half
Truman set the tone out of the break by opening on a 6-0 run. This gave the Bulldogs a 52-32 lead three minutes into the second half.
The Hawks pushed back by scoring the next eight points to make the deficit twelve points. Four different Hawks scored baskets during the swing.
QU was not able to get any closer before the third quarter ended. Truman went into the fourth quarter up 62-44.
Turnovers killed most of the Hawks' chances to get back into the game. Quincy had 20 in the contest with 13 of them in the second half.
The Hawks fell 79-56.
