MASON, Oh. -
Nick Stroud continued the Hawks dominance on the mound as the senior right-hander tossed six shutout innings for the QU baseball team. The Hawks defeated Malone University 4-0 for their fourth straight victory.
Play by Play
After the Hawks were retired in order in the top of the first, Stroud took the mound to begin his strong outing.
Stroud got a pair of strikeouts and a weak groundout to retire the Pioneers in order.
Michael Nielsen got the Hawks offense going with a lead off single in the top of the second. Following a
Lance Logsdon strikeout,
Cole Evans drew a walk to put runners on first and second with one out.
Jacob Kalusniak singled to score Nielsen and give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
TJ Tamaccio drew a walk to load the bases for
Nolan Snyder.
Snyder struck out swinging to bring the
Chandler Purcell to the plate.
During Purcell's at-bat, the Pioneers attempted to pick off
TJ Tamaccio at first base. The pitcher's throw went wide and allowed
Cole Evans to score and give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
Purcell struck out to end the Hawks frame.
Stroud worked another scoreless inning in the bottom of the second to bring the Hawks up to the plate.
Ray Greco tripled to lead off the inning and brought
Cody Birdsong to bat.
The Hawks All-American second baseman lifted a sac fly to center field to score Greco and gave Stroud a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third.
The first two batters walked to put runners on first and second with no one out for Malone. Stroud got a groundout to Nielsen and the Pioneers had runners on second and third with one out.
Stroud was able to get another Pioneer hitter to groundout to Nielsen. During the play, the Pioneers runner on second base got caught in between bases and was tagged out to end the inning.
Stroud continued to hold the Pioneers at bay, finishing his outing by striking out the side in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Nolan Snyder led off the top of the seventh with his team-leading third triple of the year. Two batters later,
Ray Greco brought home Snyder with a sac fly to put QU ahead 4-0.
Sam Stephens worked two perfect innings to send the game into the ninth with the Hawks still leading 4-0.
Alex Pribyl came into the game looking to shut the door and preserve the Hawks third straight shutout. Pribyl struggled to find the zone and walked the two hitters he faced.
Karl Hirsch relieved Pribyl and got three straight outs to give the Hawks a 4-0 victory and QU's fourth straight win.
