Offense Powers Hawks to Series Win Over #18 Mississippi College

CLINTON, Ms. - The Hawks baseball team finished its three-game set with Mississippi College on Saturday afternoon.  Quincy came back to beat Mississippi College by a score of 15-9.

Play by Play

After the Hawks were retired in order in the top of the first, the Choctaws took the first lead of the game.

Following a leadoff single, starter Aaron Stone retired the next two batters on a fly out and a ground out.

The leadoff hitter, Dylan Duplechain advanced to second on the groundout to put a runner in scoring position for the Choctaws.

Billy Cameron singled through the right side to bring home the first run of the game.  Stone was able to retire the next hitter to bring the Hawks to the plate in the top of the second.

A line drive single by Michael Nielsen led off the Hawks top of the second.  Nielsen advanced to second on a groundout by freshman Lance Lodgson.

In his first collegiate start, Joe Roscetti worked a ten-pitch walk to put runners on first and second with one out.

Jacob Kalusniak struck out looking to bring TJ Tamaccio to the plate with two outs.

Tamaccio worked a nine-pitch walk to load the bases for the junior center field Nolan Snyder to the plate.

With an 0-1 count, a passed ball allowed Nielsen to score from third and tied the game at 1-1.

Snyder lifted a deep drive to right field on the following pitch but was retired to end the Hawks threat in the second.

In the bottom of the frame, the first three batters reached to load the bases against Aaron Stone.

Stone got the next hitter to strikeout swinging to keep the score 1-1.  A sac-fly gave the Choctaws a 2-1 advantage over the Hawks.

A walk to the next batter forced head coach Josh Rabe to lift Aaron Stone and go to the bullpen.

Jimmy McDonald came on to relieve Stone and walked the first two batters he faced to bring home a pair of runs and give Mississippi College a 4-1 lead.

McDonald stopped the bleeding by getting a strikeout to end the Choctaws frame.  Mississippi College had five batters reach base via the walk in the bottom of the second.

The Hawks looked to answer in the top of the third as Chandler Purcell continued his hot start to the season. Purcell collected his fifth hit on a line drive single to lead off the frame.

Michael Nielsen drove a two-out double to score Purcell and cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the third.

Lance Logsdon drew a walk to extend the inning and brought Joe Roscetti to the plate.  On a ball in the dirt, Logsdon was caught trying to advance to second to end the inning.

The Choctaws continued their scoring ways and added four runs in the bottom of the third to push their lead to 8-2.

Red hot Chandler Purcell singled home a run to cut the lead to 8-3 in the top of the fourth.  Quincy left a pair of runners on base to end the inning.

John Hurayt made his first appearance as a Hawk and got the first zero of the game for QU, setting the Choctaws down in four batters.

Quincy put a pair of runners on base in the fifth, but an inning-ending double play ended the Hawks chance.

Hurayt worked another scoreless frame to bring the Hawks back to the plate.

Jacob Kalusniak and TJ Tamaccio both walked to bring Nolan Snyder to the dish in the sixth.

Snyder roped a single to center field to bring home Kalusniak.  Chandler Purcell collected his third hit of the game to score Tamaccio and Snyder with a double down the left field line.

With one out, Cody Birdsong was hit by a pitch and Michael Nielsen drew a walk to load the bases.

Freshman Lance Logsdon tattooed a long home run to dead center field for a grand slam and give the Hawks a 10-8 lead.

Quincy sent 13 batters to the plate in the sixth inning before the third out was recorded.

Jeff Hightower made his debut on the mound for the Hawks and worked around a few Hawks miscues to keep QU ahead 10-9 after the bottom of the sixth.

The Hawks loaded the bases in the top of the seventh and Jacob Kalusniak worked a walk to put the Hawks ahead 11-9.  TJ Tamaccio also worked a bases loaded walk to extend the lead to 12-9.

Nolan Snyder broke the game open with a bases-clearing triple to deep right center field to put the Hawks ahead 15-9.  This was the end of the scoring for the Hawks in the seventh.

Jeff Hightower worked a scoreless bottom of the seventh to maintain the six-run lead.

Jack Widhalm retired the Choctaws in order in the bottom of the eighth, needing just eight pitches to retire the side.

Alex Pribyl completed the comeback by working a scoreless ninth to give the Hawks a 15-9 win.
