QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team held off the Lincoln Blue Tigers in the final game of the Subway Holiday Classic for a 90-84 victory on Sunday (Dec. 15). The Hawks offense was firing on all cylinders as five players reached double figures.
1st Half
The final game of the day had high energy and a fast pace from the beginning. Quincy jumped out to a 6-2 lead after three-pointers from
Austin Downing and
Ryan Briscoe.
Tanner Stuckman got in on the action just a few minutes later. The forward from Quincy, Illinois scored a pair of baskets to up QU's lead to 13-5 with 14:21 left to play in the first half.
Lincoln connected on back-to-back three pointers which cut Quincy's lead to just 13-11, but halfway through the opening half, the Hawks gained some space.
Charles Callier nailed a shot from three-point range to give the Hawks a 26-16 lead at the ten-minute mark.
The Hawks held the lead for the remainder of the first half. With 1:58 remaining,
Austin Downing hit a shot to give Quincy a 45-31 lead.
Lincoln ended the half by scoring the next six of eight buckets in the final two minutes. Quincy held a slim 47-42 lead going to the intermission.
2nd Half
Tanner Stuckman started off the second half with a deep three to get QU off on the right foot. Just three and a half minutes into the second period, QU got their lead back into double figures. After a layup by
Aziz Fadika with 16:36 left, Quincy held a 61-50 advantage.
Over the course of the next ten minutes, the home team was able to boost their lead to eighteen points by outscoring Lincoln 21-14. The score sat at 82-64 with 5:37 remaining.
With 4:14 remaining,
Tanner Stuckman knocked in a three to make the score 86-67.
The Hawks looked to be firmly in control, but the Blue Tigers made one last surge. Lincoln went on a 15-0 run over three minutes. Quincy's lead shrunk to 86-82 with 1:26 left to play.
Quincy was able to hold off the Blue Tigers with late game free throws. The home team won the game and took home the Subway Classic hardware with a 90-84 victory.
Tanner Stuckman and
Ryan Briscoe both scored twenty or more points, while
Charles Callier,
Aziz Fadika, and
Austin Downing each scored in double figures as well.
Stuckman and
Aziz Fadika were named to the All-Tournament team while Stuckman won the Most Outstanding Player Award for his performances over the weekend as well.
