QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team matched up with Hannibal-LaGrange University in their first game of the Subway Holiday Classic on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 14).
Tanner Stuckman,
Austin Downing,
Aziz Fadika, and
Jonah Smith all scored over ten points during the 71-44 win.
How It Happened
The home team got off to a slow start in Saturday's contest. The Trojans opened the game with a 5-2 lead. Quincy tied the score after a pair of free throws from
Austin Downing, and another free throw from
Aziz Fadika.
HLGU connected on a three-pointer with 15:19 left to make it an 8-5 game before later bumping QU's deficit to 10-6 just forty seconds later.
Charles Callier and Fadika both scored during the next two possessions to tie the score at 10-10. On the next possession, Downing found Callier for a three-pointer from the right wing to give the Hawks their first lead of the game. From this point on, QU did not relinquish the lead.
With 12:56 remaining in the first half, the Trojans tied the game at 13 apiece.
Tanner Stuckman scored the next four points to get the Hawks rolling. Another jumper by Stuckman followed by back-to-back buckets from Downing started a 9-0 run by the Hawks.
Jonah Smith capped the run with a three-pointer as nine minutes remained in the first half.
After the run, Quincy held a 26-15 lead. The remainder of the first half was played evenly as the Hawks outscored the Trojans 13-11.
The Hawks held a 39-26 lead at the half.
Quincy pulled away in the final twenty minutes of the game. The Hawks boosted their lead to twenty-one in the first five minutes after halftime.
The home team outscored the Trojans 32-11 in the second half to cruise to a 71-44 victory.
