LEBANON, Ill. – The Quincy University football team traveled down to McKendree University for a GLVC matchup on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 9). The Bearcats scored the first twenty-eight points, and the Hawks were never able to fully recover. McKendree won in a shootout 62-34.
1st Half
McKendree scored the first six points after two field goal conversions. The Bearcats led 6-0 with 4:40 left in the first quarter.
The Hawks struggled to get going in the beginning of Saturday's game. In the first seven offensive possessions, the Hawks yielded five punts, a fumble, and a turnover on downs.
The Bearcats took advantage of QU's early miscues. In the second quarter, McKendree went ahead 28-0 after three touchdowns that included a blocked QU punt returned for a touchdown.
Quincy finally got things rolling when
Andrew Rund found
Chris Poindexter for a short touchdown pass to get on the board. QU trailed 28-7 with 4:23 left in the first half.
QU's defense could not get out of their own way even when they appeared to make a game-changing play. The Hawks blocked a McKendree field goal and returned it to midfield with under a minute left in the first half. The play was negated after the defense jumped offsides on the kick attempt.
The Bearcats got the ball back with first and goal after the penalty, and the home team punched in another score before halftime. Quincy trailed 35-7.
2nd Half
After the intermission, the Hawks let up a 50-yard touchdown on the Bearcats opening drive in the second half. The score moved to 42-7 favoring McKendree.
On the next QU drive, Rund tossed a 16-yard touchdown pass to
Briar Hancock to make it a 42-14 game.
Quincy's defense got a turnover on the very next offensive play from McKendree to give the Hawks the ball back quickly. The Hawks drove down to inside the five-yard line and punched in a short yardage score on a run by
Keenan Hailey. The point after was no good, as the Hawks trailed 42-20 with 6:16 left in the third.
With things starting to swing the Hawks way, their good fortune continued on the ensuing kickoff. QU's special teams forced a fumble on the kickoff return, and it was recovered by
Isaac Waller.
Trevon Rhodes punched the ball out for the Hawks.
McKendree quickly turned the tables when the Bearcats intercepted
Andrew Rund on the first play from scrimmage after the fumble recovery.
Nothing came out of the Bearcat drive as QU's defense got a stop.
Quincy's offense made up for the turnover by scoring on the next drive.
Andrew Rund connected with
Gabriel Bryant for 34 yards on a touchdown strike. QU now trailed 42-27 with under two minutes left in the third quarter.
The Bearcats answered right back with a kickoff return that put them quickly near the red zone on QU's 26-yard line. McKendree scored in four plays to push their lead to 49-27.
As the fourth quarter began, the Hawk offense was back on the move. QU drove 75 yards in just six plays for another score. This time,
Marlin Washington caught a 21-yard touchdown from Rund. QU trailed 49-34.
McKendree held off Quincy by adding another score and forcing another fumble by the Hawks. The home team went on to win 62-34 in Saturday's shootout.
