QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team defeated Truman State in a non-conference matchup in four sets on Tuesday night (Nov. 5). Sophomore
Makayla Knoblauch and freshman
Emily Rehagen each finished with double-doubles for the Hawks.
1st Set
The Hawks came out on a roll after scoring the first three points of the match. Two kills by
Emily Rehagen and another from
Sarah Brown gave QU the early advantage.
Shortly after, the Bulldogs cut the lead to 4-3.
Stephanie Mizeur added a kill to keep the Hawks in front 7-4.
Quincy maintained the lead for much of the first set and even pushed that lead to six. After two more kills by Rehagen and an attack error on TSU, the Hawks held a 16-10 advantage.
Midway through the opening set, sophomore setter
Makayla Knoblauch surpassed 1,000 assists for the season. The only other player to accomplish this feat in the last seven years was senior setter
Sara Rathbun last season.
As the first set continued, another attack error allowed QU to push the score to 21-14.
QU stayed in control and took the first set 25-16.
2nd Set
The second set saw the momentum swing back towards the Bulldogs. Both teams were knotted up at 4-4 early on after
Baylie Stephens and
Sarah Brown got kills.
After the early tie, TSU gained some distance with four straight points. This made the score 8-4.
The Bulldogs were able to hold on to the lead despite the Hawks making a late run. After being down 17-13, the Hawks cut the deficit to three.
An attack error and a Rehagen kill brought the score to 23-20. Quincy's late run was not enough as Truman State tied the game at one set each with a 25-21 win.
3rd Set
In the third set, Truman appeared to ride the wave of their second set win. The Bulldogs found themselves ahead 7-2 after a 6-0 run.
The Hawks turned things around midway through set three.
Sarah Brown,
Stephanie Mizeur, and
Alaina Rothermich all collected kills that helped QU tie the score 14-14.
A service ace by
Sarah Blair gave the Hawks their first lead of the set 16-15. From this point on the two teams battled for the lead.
Two late lead changes between both teams led to a very highly-contested ending to the third set. The Bulldogs regained a 22-21 lead, and Quincy quickly tied it.
From there,
Stephanie Mizeur slammed a kill to give QU the lead back 23-22.
Quincy finished strong and got kills from Mizeur and
Alaina Rothermich to take a 2-1 lead in the game. QU won the third set 25-23.
4th Set
Truman once again jumped out to an early lead in the next set. The Bulldogs found themselves ahead 4-1 after scoring four in a row. Two attack errors and two TSU kills led to the early advantage.
The Hawks came roaring back by scoring the next six of seven points. QU took a 7-5 advantage which forced Truman to take a timeout.
Makayla Knoblauch contributed more than just assists by adding a kill and a block that allowed QU to move ahead 10-6.
Quincy kept things rolling and upped the lead to 16-9 after kills by Rehagen and Knoblauch. QU remained in control and forced another timeout by the Bulldogs after leading 20-13.
The Hawks won the set and took the match with a 25-18 fourth-set win.
