Women's Basketball Downs NCAA Division I SIUE in Final Exhibition Game

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team earned a preseason upset over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville at the Vadalabene Center on Tuesday night (Nov. 5). Freshman Laney Lantz led all players with 23 points, while Aleksandra Petrovic added 20 points as the Hawks defeated the Cougars 70-65.

How It Happened
The offense complemented the defense on Tuesday night, as the Hawks forced the home team into shooting less than 40% from the field and only 15% from the 3-point line.

Quincy led by three in the opening quarter after Dami Adeyinka converted a three-point play. SIUE answered with a 7-2 run to end the quarter, holding an 18-14 lead.

The Cougars led by as many as seven in the second quarter, and then Laney Lantz took over. The freshman from Augusta, Illinois tallied 11 points in the quarter, including a stretch where she scored nine straight for the Hawks. QU went into halftime with a five-point lead, up 36-31.

Quincy stretched their lead to nine early in the third. Grace Schraufnagel found Aleksandra Petrovic for a fast break layup to put the Hawks up 46-37 with 5:53 left in the quarter. The Cougars defense turned up the pressure after that, not allowing QU to score again. SIUE ended the third quarter on an 11-0 run, taking a 48-46 lead into the final quarter.

The Hawks quickly retook the lead early in the fourth after Ella Gobald knocked down a three. The Cougars would tie the game one more time, but QU never relinquished the lead again. Laney Lantz, Aleksandra Petrovic, and Maddie Spagnola all knocked down timely free throws down the stretch to seal the victory for the Hawks.
