QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team opened the 2019 Subway Tip-Off Classic with a 58-47 victory over Upper Iowa University Friday night (Nov. 22).
Aleksandra Petrovic led the Hawks with 13 points and 7 rebounds, while
Dami Adeyinka added 10 points off the bench.
1st Quarter
The home team fell behind early in the night cap of the Subway Tip-Off Classic. Upper Iowa scored the first two baskets to take a 5-0 lead in the opening two minutes of the game.
QU struggled to get going offensively in the early goings. The Hawks went 0-4 to start the game, but
Aleksandra Petrovic knocked in a three-pointer that made the score 7-3 UIU.
Petrovic scored another basket on the next possession which put QU down just two points, 7-5.
Alexa Low tied the game with a basket in the paint with five minutes left in the first.
Quincy took their first lead after a layup by Petrovic made the score 9-8 QU.
Dami Adeyinka came off the bench and got in on the scoring, allowing the Hawks to go ahead 11-8.
Upper Iowa regained the lead with a three-pointer with a minute left.
Marta Rivera answered with a basket in the paint to bring the score to 13-12 QU at the end of the opening quarter.
2nd Quarter
Upper Iowa started the second quarter with a three, but
Alexa Low knocked in a mid-range jump shot to tie the score at 15-15.
The Peacocks gained a 22-17 lead after a Hawks turnover. Quincy came back with buckets by
Grace Schraufnagel and Petrovic to bring the deficit back down to one, 22-21.
Jessica Merino made her first three-pointer of the game with four minutes to play in the quarter. This gave Quincy a 24-22 advantage.
With a minute left in the half, Petrovic found a streaking
Jessica Merino for a layup to make the score 28-24. Quincy got a defensive stop on the last Upper Iowa possession before halftime to go into the break with a four point lead.
3rd Quarter
The Hawks opened the second half with three defensive stops followed by a pair of buckets.
Amanda Porth and
Ella Gobald scored to push QU's lead to 32-24 in the first two minutes.
Upper Iowa scored their first bucket with 6:53 left in the third after starting 0-4. The Peacocks followed with their first timeout of the quarter.
After the timeout, UIU set up a full court press and forced a QU turnover. Quincy kept their composure and upped their lead to nine points after a pair of made free throws by
Laney Lantz. This made the score 35-26 Hawks.
Later in the quarter, Lantz hit nothing but net on a corner three-pointer to make QU's lead 42-33. The Peacocks came back with a three of their own after a
Jessica Merino free throw. This made it a 43-36 game with less than a minute left in the quarter.
The score sat at 43-38 heading into the fourth quarter.
4th Quarter
The Peacocks scored a layup to start the fourth, but
Jessica Merino knocked down a three in the corner to quickly answer.
At the five minute mark, the Peacocks tightened the score at 46-43 QU. Both teams went over two minutes without a field goal.
Marta Rivera made a short jumper in the paint followed by a corner three from
Dami Adeyinka to extend the Hawks lead to 51-45.
With 1:53 remaining, head coach
Jeni Garber called a timeout as her team held a 52-47 lead. Out of the timeout, a fifth team foul on the Peacocks put
Laney Lantz on the free throw line. She made one of two attempts to make it a 53-47 game.
Upper Iowa turned the ball back over to the Hawks on the next possession.
Dami Adeyinka scored a basket with a minute remaining to extend QU's lead to 55-47.
The Hawks got a defensive stop after a timeout, and UIU proceeded to foul Petrovic to stop the clock. She made both attempts to push QU's lead to 58-47 with just 20 seconds remaining.
That score stood as the Hawks ran out the clock to secure the victory.
