QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy women's volleyball team was fighting for their playoff lives going into the final weekend of the season. The Hawks faced off with Southern Indiana on Friday night (Nov. 15) needing a win, and they did so in straight set fashion 25-21, 25-12, 25-23.
1st Set
Sarah Brown started off the scoring with a tip-in kill. USI answered with a point, but Brown collected another kill to allow QU to move ahead 2-1.
After a service error on the Hawks, the score sat tied at 3-3. Southern Indiana grasped their first lead 4-3 after a kill. Quincy was able to respond by tallying the next two points which allowed QU to go back in front 5-4.
The Screaming Eagles scored the next five of six points to move ahead of the Hawks 10-6. Quincy called their first timeout.
After the short break, the visiting Screaming Eagles remained in the lead. The Hawks deficit was six points, but a kill by
Emily Rehagen made the score 14-9.
QU was able to trim the lead after five straight points brought the first set to 16-15 USI. The Screaming Eagles called their first timeout.
Following the timeout, the two teams battled to gain an advantage. The Hawks took the lead back when a Rehagen kill brought the score to 19-18 Hawks.
Makayla Knoblauch added another kill to make the score 20-18.
The Hawks bumped the lead to three before USI called another timeout.
For the rest of the set, QU stayed in control and won 25-21.
2nd Set
Southern Indiana jumped out to a 3-1 lead to start the second set.
Emily Rehagen brought the Hawks back to even after a kill and a service ace.
QU added two more points to go in front 5-3. USI quickly answered with back-to-back points tying the game at 5-5.
Quincy kept the foot on the gas and scored four points in a row to increase the advantage to 9-5.
Alaina Rothermich had two kills during that span.
The home team bumped the lead up to 11-6, forcing USI to call their first timeout of set number two.
Quincy kept rolling after the timeout and increased their lead to 16-8 after a five-point run.
Makayla Knoblauch had two kills and Rehagen added another to fuel the run.
As the remainder of set two continued, QU remained firmly in control. The Hawks won in commanding fashion 25-12 in set two.
3rd Set
After dropping the first two sets, USI came out with urgency. The visitors grabbed a 3-2 lead after a pair of early kills.
The Hawks had an answer with back-to-back kills by
Lauren Worl that made the score 5-4 QU. Quincy also scored the next point to move in front 6-4.
Southern Indiana clapped back with three points in a row to regain the lead 7-6.
USI forced Quincy to call their first timeout of the set after adding two more points and gaining a 9-7 lead.
After the timeout, Southern Indiana clung to a two point lead 11-9, but QU rallied to score the next three of four points which tied the set at twelve apiece. Southern Indiana called a timeout to stop QU's charge.
The visitors went on to tally the next three points following the timeout. This gave Southern Indiana a 15-12 lead midway through.
As the third set came down to the wire, USI held a slight 21-18 lead. QU fired back with a pair of points, including a kill by
Sara Rathbun to make it 21-20.
The third set was quickly tied 22-22 after a bad set by the Screaming Eagles. USI called their second timeout after the score moved to a 23-23 tie.
QU wasted no time in closing things out. An attack error and a kill by
Emily Rehagen solidified the straight-set sweep, as the Hawks took the third set 25-23.
